Authorities Refuse Permission To Sikh Couple To Adopt ‘White Child’ June 27, 2017 18:17

Authorities Refuse Permission To Sikh Couple To Adopt ‘White Child’:- Because of their “cultural heritage” in a strange act, a Sikh couple in the UK were refused permission to adopt a “white child”. They were further told to adopt a child from India instead. The couple both in their 30’s, Sandeep and Reena Mander who are of Sikh-Indian heritage and British-born business professionals from Berkshire were quoted as saying, on the basis that white British or European applicants would be given preference, they were told not to apply to become the adoptive parents. They would be pleased to adopt a child of any ethnic background, but  on the grounds that only white children were available, they were rejected as potential parents, said the couple to Adopt Berkshire adoption agency. On the basis of race, adoption agencies are allowed to prioritize, in order to match children to prospective parents of the same ethnic background. A child’s ethnicity should not be a barrier to adoption, said the Government. The Manders, whose cause has been taken up by Prime Minister Theresa May as their local MP, will take their case to court. They are further applying to Slough county court, seeking a declaration that the policy should allow them to adopt. The law firm McAllister Olivarius is representing the couple and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is supporting their case. Last year, from Adopt Berkshire, an agency run by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM), the Manders had an assessment and home visit from the agency. They were allegedly told that, while in other respects they would be suitable adoptive parents, they could not apply because only white children were available for adoption and therefore white couples would be given priority. On the allegations made, the Adopt Berkshire has not yet made any comments. But, its website says that from different cultural, religious and sexual backgrounds, it welcomes applicants. The couple had been trying to conceive for seven years, including 16 sessions of IVF treatment, and decided to adopt, said Mander, Vice-president of sales at Continuum Commerce Solutions, a payments technology company. “Having attended introductory workshops organized by Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) and Adopt Berkshire, giving an adopted child - no matter what race - the security of a loving home was all we wanted to do,” he told the daily. “What we did not expect was a refusal for us to even apply for adoption, not because of our incapability to adopt, but because our cultural heritage was defined as ‘Indian/Pakistani’,” he said. At first, the Manders through the council’s complaints procedure tried to get the decision of the agency turned. The Local Government Ombudsman, is awaiting the outcome of their legal action. New Feature Of Snapchat Raises Privacy Concerns? June 27, 2017 16:04

New Feature Of Snapchat Raises Privacy Concerns?:- Privacy concerns are being raised for parents and child safety advocates by the latest update to the photo-sharing app, Snap chat, the Snap Map. As per the new update, certain users can track down your exact location. In addition, you can select to share your location with all your friends, a few friends you select, or you can disappear by going into “Ghost Mode” from the map at any time with this new feature. But, a few concerns have been expressed by the experts about the privacy implications of such a feature. Childnet International, a children’s internet safety advocacy group, said in a blog post, “Think about where you are sharing your location. Location services such as Snap Maps can lead people to your house.” By default, the location sharing is off in “ghost mode” and it is impossible to share your location with someone who is not your friend, said Snapchat. “We want to make sure that all ‘Snapchatters’, parents and educators have accurate information about how the snap map works,” a Snapchat spokesperson told a leading news channel. The experts advise users to only share their location with people they know in person, and never with strangers. Cyber security expert Charles Tendell was quoted as saying, “It is very easy to accidentally share everything that you have got with more people than you need too, and that is the scariest portion.” SUPRAJA

SC Refuses Interim Order Against Centre’s Notification On Aadhaar June 27, 2017 15:30

SC Refuses Interim Order Against Centre’s Notification On Aadhaar:- Against the Centre’s notification on making Aadhaar compulsory, for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to pass any temporary order. No interim order can be passed at this stage on the “mere apprehension” of petitioners, that Government may withhold people from availing benefits of various social welfare, due to lack of Aadhaar, said a vacation bench of Justices comprising A M Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha. The apex court on June 9 passed the judgment, in which it had upheld the validity of an Income Tax Act provision, making Aadhaar compulsory for allotment of PAN Cards and filing of tax returns. But, it had put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy. “In view of the observations made in the judgment in Para 90 of the case, decided on June 9, no further observation is required,” the bench said. For those who do not have Aadhaar and are availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes, the Centre has extended the June 30 deadline to September 30, said Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench during the hearing. Directions should be given to the Centre to not withhold any person of the benefits of social welfare schemes which he/she is enjoying now due to lack of Aadhaar, said Senior advocate Shyam Divan, who is appearing for petitioners. The bench told Divan that, “On mere apprehensions, no interim order can be passed in judicial writ. You have to wait for one week. If somebody is deprived (of the benefits) you can point out the same to this court. It further posted the matter for further hearing on July 7.  Three separate petitions challenging government’s notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes were being heard by the apex court. On June 9, the Centre told the apex court that around 95.10% of the entire population has registered voluntarily for Aadhaar and discernment of “large-scale exception” of citizens from government benefits due to lack of unique number was “misplaced” and “unfounded”. In its counter affidavit filed in response to several petitions opposing the scheme, the Government had quoted a World Bank 2016 report. In the report, it said if Aadhaar was applied to all social programmes and welfare distribution, it would save the government USD 11 billion annually. The government’s savings through Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme on account of Aadhaar in 2014-16, was Rs 49,560 crore. Though the notification requires people to enroll for Aadhaar by June 30, those who are unable to get themselves enrolled due to lack of facilities, can give their contact details and would be registered later, said the Centre. When Aadhaar has been adopted by several authorities in consistent to directions by the apex court, and as per legislative amendments by the Parliament, the court in pursuance to the Aadhaar Act 2016, shall not to hold applications seeking interim stay of notifications passed, as it would stall and interfere with the governance. On May 19, the Centre refused to extend the June 30 deadline for making Aadhaar mandatory for availing social scheme benefits. “There is no question” of extending it,” Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had said. He further said the idea behind making Aadhaar mandatory for welfare schemes was that the benefit should not go to “ghosts” as was noticed in schemes like the public distribution system (PDS). A great deal of orders earlier had been passed by the apex court asking the government and its agencies not to make Aadhaar mandatory for extending benefits of their welfare schemes. However, the Centre sought SC to seek Aadhaar card voluntarily from citizens for extending benefits of schemes like LPG subsidy, Jan Dhan scheme and Public Distribution System etc., the Centre had been allowed by the Supreme Court.
