Chocolate keeps diabetes away: Study April 30, 2016 13:39

A new study claims that, consuming small amount of chocolate everyday, would make one stay away from the diabetes. After conducting the research on 1153 people aged 18-69 years, the researchers found out that, eating 100 grams of chocolate everyday, can reduce insulin resistance and improves liver enzymes. Insulin resistance is considered as a risk factor to cardiovascular disease, the researchers say.  After finding the benefits of chocolate, the researchers have decided to analyze a nation sample of adults, taking their lifestyle and dietary factors into account and including the simultaneous consumption of tea and coffee. Also read: Anti-diabetic drug ‘Metformin’ may help keep cholesterol at check This is because both tea and coffee can be high in polyphenol, which may provide chocolate, with its beneficial cardiometabolic effects, researchers said. Reacting to the case above, Saverio Stranges from University of Warwick, UK, said, “Given the growing body of evidence, including our own study, cocoa-based products may represent an additional dietary recommendation to improve cardio-metabolic health; however, observational results need to be supported by robust trial evidence.”“Potential applications of this knowledge include recommendations by healthcare professionals to encourage individuals to consume a wide range of phytochemical-rich foods, which can include dark chocolate in moderate amounts,” said Stranges."However, it is important to differentiate between the natural product cocoa and the processed product chocolate, which is an energy-dense food," he added.Over 80% of the people participated in the research, have claimed to eat 24.8 gram of Chocolate, on an average, everyday. Those who ate chocolate regularly were younger and more physically active, than those who did not eat. "It is also possible that chocolate consumption may represent an overall marker for a cluster of favourable socio-demographic profiles, healthier lifestyle behaviours and better health status," said Alaa Alkerwi from Luxembourg Institute of Health. The findings were published in the British Journal of Nutrition. By Phani Ch

Dasari, Jindal, Koda to face trail in Coal scam case April 30, 2016 11:50

Delhi special court ordered to put on trial, the former minister for Coal, Dasari Narayana Rao, former Congress MP and industrialist Naveen Jindal, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda and 12 others. The court said that, the “facts and circumstances” brought on record prima facie “establishes the hatching of a criminal conspiracy after careful calculation and minute planning”.Regarding the allocation of a coal block in Jharkhand in 2008, all the biggies mentioned above, faced charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy. Referring to the alleged irregularities in the allocation of the Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block, special Judge Bharat Parashar, ordering framing of charges said, prima facie it “appears that facade of various companies has been created as a smokescreen to cover up the actual payoff” of Rs 2 crore to Dasari by Jindal through his “group of companies or associated companies” to secure a coal block for his firms Jindal Steel Power Limited (JSPL) and Gagan Sponge Iron Pvt Ltd (GSIPL).Rajeev Jain, Director of Jindal Realty Pvt Ltd; Former Coal Secretary H C Gupta;  GSIPL Directors, Girish Kumar Suneja and Radha Krishna Saraf; Suresh Singhal, Director of New Delhi Exim Pvt Ltd (NDEPL); K Ramakrishna Prasad, MD of  Sowbhagya Media Ltd; and CA Gyan Swaroop Garg, are the other accused ones, along with Dasari, Jindal and Koda. All the 5 firms - JSPL, Jindal Realty Pvt Ltd, Gagan Infraenergy Ltd (formerly known as GSIPL), Sowbhagya Media Ltd and NDEPL - have also been ordered to be put on trial. The court raised charges against all the accused under IPC sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), read with 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) and under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. On May 11th, the court will formally put all the accused on trial. On the other hand, the court even agreed to hear Suresh Singhal’s plea on the same day. Speaking about the issue, Parashar said, “if the entire process of allocation of coal block is seen and analysed while also keeping in mind the money trail whereby Rs 2 crore came to be transferred to Dasari Narayan Rao by Naveen Jindal, the same, prima facie, reflects active collusion between public servants involved in the process and private parties in whose favor the coal block stood allotted.”The special court said, in the entire conspiracy, Jindal prima facie was the “central figure”. “In fact, his role has come out to be that of a central figure around whom the entire criminal conspiracy revolved… as being the common central thread running through all the said transactions through his various group or associated companies… his role even travels beyond the area of grave suspicion as regard his complicity,” Parashar said. The court said GSIPL prima facie could “not have been allocated any coal block at all in any circumstance” and “not only it was found to be ineligible” but it had “grossly misrepresented on many aspects both at the time of submission of its application form and also in the feedback form”. “The facts collected during investigation also show that there was rather no intention on the part of GSIPL to establish any power plant and thereby to use the coal to be extracted from the said coal block,” Parashar said. NDEPL investing Rs. 2 crores in Sowbhagya Media Ltd (SML) is an “admitted fact”, the court says and the investment “in fact constitutes one part of the entire money trail.”Court said, 2nd part of the alleged money trail “demonstrates” how Rs 2 crore invested by NDEPL was “actually money belonging” to Naveen Jindal Group of Companies. It also said “grave suspicion arises” as regard the “genuineness” of the transactions, in which NDEPL invested Rs 2 crore in SML.“Naveen Jindal Group of Companies were primarily owned by Naveen Jindal and he was the central figure through whom the said payoff of Rs 2 crores flowed. In fact, a web of various corporate entities has been introduced to cover-up the said illegal act of making a payment of Rs 2 crore to Dasari Narayan Rao,” Parashar said. Coming to Madhu Koda, the special court clarified that it was prima facie “clear” that being CM, he “ensured” that the recommendation for the entire coal block be made to the Coal Ministry “only” in favour of Naveen Jindal Group of Companies. Court further said that, Dasari was in “active agreement and connivance” with Jindal and his group of companies. “Prima facie it is clear that Rao abused his official position in pursuance to the conspiracy so hatched with the other co-accused persons so as to facilitate allotment of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block in favour of JSPL and GSIPL,” the court said. The court said prima facie all transactions seem to have been undertaken with the “assistance of best of the legal brains and experts in financial transactions” to “escape the clutches of law and to give each of the transactions a semblance of compliance with law. H C Gupta, Secretary Coal and Chairman Screening Committee, along with Dasari Narayan Rao, Minister of State for Coal, consciously chose to overlook all such misrepresentations or false and highly inflated unsubstantiated claims of the company even though they were writ large on the face of record.” Reacting to the court order, a spokesperson for JSPL said, “In the context of the Special Court’s order in respect of allocation of the Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block and the charges thereof, JSPL reiterates that it is confident that it will stand vindicated at the end of the ongoing judicial process. We deny all allegations made against our company and its management. We have full faith in the Indian judicial system and are confident to come out clean during the process. The said allocation was made to the company purely on merit and, all along the course of the investigation, the company and its officials have fully cooperated with the authorities, and whenever asked, explained and provided all supporting documents.” By Phani Ch

Hardik effect behind EBC quota in Gujarat! April 30, 2016 07:59

Gujarat government has announced 10% quota for all the non-reserved categories on the basis of their annual income. As per the proposal, families, whose annual income is less than Rs. 6 lakh, will be eligible to get education and employment support. After making the discussions with BJP president Amit Shah and conducting meeting with the state cabinet ministers, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel made the announcement. “This 10% reservation will not cause any changes to the reservation already offered to members of the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC),” CM said. Patidar community's demand since last year, for the reservation, has risen and even warned to withdraw the support to BJP government, which is one of the key vote bank of the party. In that sense, the Patidar's strong influence was even felt, after BJP and Congress had a tie in the recently held Gandhi Nagar civic polls. After 9 persons were dead in the Patel agitation in the September last year, the state government, under Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavlamban Yojna, had announced a Rs. 1,000-crore package for the economically backward community. The CM's scheme also included scholarships for the students and also age limit relaxation for the jobs, adding to it, the criterion to avail the benefits under the scheme is the annual income of the family, should not exceed Rs. 4.5 lakh. Students securing above 90% or more in Class 12, would get 50% fee waiver with a ceiling of Rs. 2 lakh per year in self-financed medical colleges, while those pursuing the engineering and pharmacy courses, would be eligible to a ceiling of Rs. 50,000. The age limit to apply government jobs was also raised from 28 years to 33 years. However, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor Hardik Patel on behalf of the Patel community had dismissed the package as a ‘lollipop’ and continued to agitate for their demands. Lukewarm response was witnessed recently, when the community attempted to hold the state to ransom with their call for ‘Gujarat bandh’, to protest against the imprisonment of Hardik and other community leaders. Supreme court rules NEET as MBBS, BDS entrance test April 29, 2016 17:33

The Supreme Court on Friday said that the entrance test for the admission to MBBS and BDS courses for the academic year 2016-17 has to be held as per the schedule through the single common entrance test National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) on May 1 and July 24.The order implied that all government colleges, deemed universities and private medical colleges will be covered under the NEET and those examinations which have already taken place or slated to be conducted separately stand scrapped.A bench comprising Justices A R Dave, Shiva Kirti Singh and A K Goel had pronounced the order yesterday after rejecting the opposition for holding NEET by the states, of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Association of Karnataka Medical Colleges, and minority institutions like CMC, Vellore, which had contended that NEET cannot be imposed on them. The apex court order had also revived the government's December 21, 2010 notification for holding a single common entrance test through NEET with a clarification that any challenge on the issue would directly come before it and no high court can interfere in it.The Centre had approached the apex Court seeking modification of its yesterday's order to allow state governments and private colleges to hold separate entrance examinations for MBBS and BDS courses for the academic year 2016-17.The apex court, in the morning indicated that it will give an urgent hearing for modification of yesterday's order, but later said it is not going to have a bench for hearing it today.Justice A R Dave, before whom the matter was mentioned by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said, "We are not having the bench. Let the exam go on. Let them file the applications."The apex court had approved the schedule put before it by the Centre, CBSE and the Medical Council of India (MCI) for treating All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) fixed for May 1 as NEET-1.It had said that those who had not applied for AIPMT will be given the opportunity to appear in NEET-II on July 24 and the combined result would be declared on August 17 so that the admission process can be completed by September 30.In its petition, the NGO Sankalp Charitable Trust had said that the Centre, MCI and CBSE were dilly-dallying in implementing the court's order on implementing the National Eligibility Entrance Test.By Premji
