Defending champs out of World Cup

Defending champions Spain was eliminated from World Cup contention Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to Chile. This Spain's second consecutive loss which made their way to the exit door.  Spain became the third straight European defending World Cup champion to flop in the group stage. France in 2002 and Italy four years ago also failed to advance, or even win a match. Fans of Spain were completely disappointed and streets in Mandrid, Barcelona were reported blank.

Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz scored goals for Chile in the 20th and 43rd minute. Spain defence was quite weak and many of the players were involved in fouls. Also Spain did not utilize golden chances, at 15th minute Xabi Alonso could convert the pass into a goal but credits to Chile's goalkeeper who managed save the ball from the reaching the post.

In other match, Netherlands scored their straight second victory. The Dutch nation beat Australia 3-2. In the Group A, Croatia advanced to the next round by winning over Cameroon with 4-0.
