P V Sindhu Wins the Semi-Finals in Olympic Games

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu from Hyderabadi has become famous overnight because of her achievement in Rio Olympic.

Sindhu defeated Japan's higher-ranked Nozomi Okuhara in Olympics Games Badminton making entry into the final of the women's singles in Olympic Games badminton on Thursday. Sindhu won by 21-19 21-10 in 49 minutes by entering gold medal clash today.

Sindhu played better than her senior Saina Nehwal, who won the bronze medal in London four years ago, and became the first ever Indian to enter a badminton final at the Games.

She was born to P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya - both former volleyballplayers. Her father has won Government of India-instituted 2000 Arjuna Award.

Sindhu was originally heading towards volleyball, where her height would have been a natural asset. However she found her calling in badminton in her coaching at railways coach. She started playing badminton at the ege of eight. She joined the famed Gopichand academy and was handpicked by the coach, Mr. Gopichand, to widen the Indian depth of players, for the Olympic.

Gopichand was cheering his student every moment in Thursday’s match. Sindhu’s father Ramana has said “Sindhu has not been using the phone for a month now, and that she’s been off Twitter since the start of the Games. And the girl who can cut a pretty pose in modelling shoots has let the hair curl out - wildly and naturally - this last one month. Moreover, she has been in boot-camp mode with Gopichand, working over the last two months on her fitness and agility - two things that have stood out and are a mammoth departure from a year ago when she was still work in progress.”

Sindhu's heart-warming feat came a day after woman grappler Sakshi Malik who had won a bronze in the 58 kg class to end the medal drought for India in the Games on the 12th day of competition.
