Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal open their Madrid Open campaigns

Andy Murray begins the defence of his Madrid Open title today.

Vasek Pospisil, Radek Stepanek should meet each other for the right to play Murray, last year's Madrid winner, in the last-32 as the world No 2 begins his clay court season.

In the last year’s final, Murray’s victory over Rafael Nadal, should provide him  with the ideal springboard in the build-up to the French Open, but Murray, traditionally can be slow to transition into this phase of the season.

After 7pm, Murray's opening game is scheduled. Elsewhere, Milos Raonic, Gael Monfils and Borna Coric are in action.

Viktor Troicki or Andrey Kuznetsov will oppose Nadal, who has already captured clay court titles this year, in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Juan Martin Del Potro, who is slowly rebuilding from injury, will be one popular addition to this tournament. His wildcard status makes him a threatening proposition.

The Argentine will face Dominic Thiem, the 14th seed, who will be ruing his luck to have drawn an unseeded player of Del Potro's stature.
