High Court seeks government’s explanation on farmer suicides

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the State Government to submit a report on the suicides of 384 farmers in Medak district recently. It may be recalled that a person named Srihari Rao filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court over the deaths of farmers in Medak district due to frequent power cuts.

The sources indicate that the farm distress has been leading to suicide rates in several parts of the state including Medak district. The farmers are facing tough time due to frequent power cuts, they added.

It is known that people in the state are fed up with power cuts. Compared to last year, power cuts are more this years. In fact, Congress leader, Chiranjeevi himself felt the same and even wrote a letter to the chief minister stating that people would not forgive the party if it ignores the problems being faced by the farmers. He has also, in his letter that he wrote earlier, mentioned that power cuts this year are little too much.

Now that the Court seeked government’s explanation on the same, one has to keep their fingers crossed and see as to what reasons the government is going to pin point at in order to defend. (Phani)
