Pulse polio on April 15

The State Polio Prevention Department announced that this month on 15 the pulse polio would be administered to all children below 5 years. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Hyderabad. All parents are requested to take their children to the nearest Pulse Polio centres for administering the dosage and thereby helping in the endeavor to eradicate the dreadful disease. The family welfare department also made an announcement to the public on Tuesday, that those of them who missed on the said date could get the drops administered on 16 and 17 of this month at the health centres across the state. Parents are requested to take their children and get their dosage of the vaccine.

India launched the Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) programme in 1995 as a result of the WHO Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Under this programme, all children under five years are given two doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) in December and January every year until polio is eradicated. The campaign proved to be successful, and the incidence of poliomyelitis in India has decreased dramatically. This exceptional achievement is the result of energy, dedication and hard efforts by the Government along with millions of vaccinators, volunteers, community mobilisers, actors, social workers and religious leaders. The polio eradication effort is the most widely recognized brand in the country, with a Bollywood mega star as its public face.
