First medal in London Olympics for India

With his victory in the 3rd position, Gagan Narang had landed India's first medal in the London Olympics 2012 with a bronze in the 10m Air Rifle event.

With a 103.1 in the final round Gagan seized the third position. Alin George Moldoveanu of Romania won the gold, while Niccolo Campriani of Italy finsihed in the second place with a Silver. Narang and Moldoveanu had the same score of 103.1 but the Romaninan had finished first in the qualifying round earning him a better position in the final round.

Abhinav Bindra, the Gold medalist in the Beijing Games had not qualied with his score of 594/600 while Narang had gone past the score with 598/600 and finished third in the final round. Bindra had jeopardized his chances of qualifying with three nines in the 6th and final round.

Abhinav Bindra was also not consistent with his world ranking in the past couple of years. He had also sunk as low as 20th though there were several expectations that he would defend his ranking after his victory in 2008.
