India in UN ECOSOC

India has been re-elected in United Nations Economic and Social Council [ECOSOC] with majority votes. This came just a week after India got re-elected to the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council [UNHRC] for the period of 2015-17. India will be acting as member in the UN's ECOSOC for three years starting from January 1st 2015.

India was competing with Asia-Pacific group for three seats. With 183 votes, India stood first while Japan and Pakistan got 181 votes each. ECOSOC, one of the six main organs of the United Nations, is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues.
