Fatty acids may help treat Type 2 Diabetes March 26, 2015 17:42

A new research has discovered that fats were a 'new weapon' to fight against type 2 diabetes and play an important role to treat it. As Diabetes is the most common lifestyle disease seen now-a-days, researches have been working hard in developing new treatment and preventive techniques. Alan Saghatelian, Ph.D at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies with Barbara Kahn, M.D. conducted the research and found a new class of potentially therapeutic lipids, called fatty-acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), found in people with insulin resistance. The FAHFAS are injected in diabetic mice to observe the result. It was found that the diabetic mice improved their glucose metabolism and insulin secretion, and opened an avenue for the development of novel medications for the disease. At Beth Israel Medical Deaconess Center, the research done by Kahn's team found that they could create obese mice that were usually they could create obese mice that were unusually sensitive to insulin and suspected that the lipids found in them were behind it. The research done on these fats could lead to diabetes therapy.Using the mass spectrometry technique, researchers identified a total of 16 different types of FAHFAs in the mice. The researchers also measured FAHFA levels in the blood samples from human subjects, and found lower levels of these compounds in those with insulin resistance. Saghatelian said that they would be able to come up with better therapies to treat the disease with fewer side effects and that would be effective to a large number of people.AW: Lizitha

Enforcement Directorate arrested Rose Valley Group Chairman Gautam Kundu March 26, 2015 16:25

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday arrested Rose Valley Group chairman Gautam Kundu in connection with the multi billion rupee ponzi scam.ED sources said Kundu was taken into custody after he failed to give proper answers during sustained questioning spread over six hours on being summoned to its office.Kundu allegedly suppressed information and did not provide details about the quantum of money collected by his group companies from the market by promising huge returns. The company also raised money through time-share schemes, promising the public that their deposits could be redeemed on maturity in the shape of accommodation in its hotels. The group - involved in sectors like realty, hospitality, media and films - has been under the scanner of various central agencies including market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) and the ED.Kundu, who had arrived at the ED office around noon for grilling, was taken to a local hospital after his arrest. He would be produced in court Thursday.Soon after Kundu's arrest, a group of Rose Valley employees shouted slogans and staged a protest demonstration before the ED office.Group managing director Shibamoy Dutta said the arrest was made despite its "cooperation with all central agencies involved in the probe"."I have just now spoken to Gautam Kundu. On behalf of ED, no paper has been shown to him. He told that he has been arrested. But he hasn't been told why. The Rose Valley group has cooperated with all the central agencies which are conducting he probe," Dutta said. The group came into focus after the Saradha ponzi scam broke in early 2013. The same year, the corporate affairs ministry named Rose Valley as one of the 73 companies involved in ponzi schemes in West Bengal.Having cast its net across the states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand and Maharashtra among others, the company is alleged to have raised close to Rs.15,000 crore.Found guilty of running "collective investment scheme" (CIS) without necessary approvals, the SEBI in June 2014 had ordered the company to refund the money to the investors and barred it barred from accessing the securities market. The SEBI had also warned the company of attachment and recovery proceedings if it failed to refund the money.Earlier, SEBI in 2011 had passed an interim order barring the group from raising public money through its unapproved CIS.The group had then moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the order but it was dismissed. It then filed an appeal before a division bench challenging the legality of the order. However, the higher bench too dismissed the appeal in July 2013.Subsequent to the appeal's dismissal, the SEBI ordered refund of investors money. While the ED attached 2,631 bank accounts of the group involving Rs.295 crore in November 2014, a Calcutta High Court division bench put a stay on the search and seizure order of the central agency. Its properties were confiscated in Odisha following a court order on February 25.Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in December last year had told the Rajya Sabha that the Rose Valley Group of companies had collected an estimated Rs.15,000 crore from investors.Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha last month, had said the Saradha Group and the Rose Valley raised Rs.12,740 crore illegally.According to Sinha, investigation revealed that the Rose Valley Group raised as much as Rs.10,281 crore from investors while Saradha firms had mobilised Rs.2,459 crore. The Rose Valley Group was one of the sponsors of Indian Premier League city franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, and were also the title sponsor of an international chess meet in Kolkata in 2012.inputs @Yahoo.com - Manohar

I am against ban - Aaamir Khan March 26, 2015 15:55

Responding on the Censor Board’s latest decision of banning some objectionable words, actor Aamir Khan has said he is totally against banning any kind of material in media or films."I am totally against banning any kind of material. When the Information & Broadcasting minister spoke to us, he also clarified that actually the ministry has no such list of cuss words. It's a certification board and not the censor board. It was nice to hear that," Mr Khan said.Sources said that the newly elected Censor Board chairman Pahlaj Nihalani had restored a 2003 order to ban a list of 28 objectionable or cuss words in any movies or documentaries.Mr. Nihlani withdrew the list after the public furor.Aamir Khan, 50, who is known for stellar roles in movies like 'Lagaan', '3 Idiots’ and ‘PK among others, opined that banning a film cannot be justified even if people don't like certain content. He referred to the 2013 Kamal Haasan movie 'Vishwaroopam' that created a controversy leading to a ban."I really feel ashamed that at that time I was lost in my work but as an industry that was the time we had to come together. I apologize to you (Kamal Hassan) publicly that I wasn't there at that time. I feel bad that we weren't there with you. Banning a film is not right."Once the film has received the certification, it is the responsibility of the state to make sure that people can watch the film without any fear," he said.Unlike most of his peers who are driven by the box-office collections, Aamir said numbers don't matter to him and it is not a criterion to select a movie based on its potential commercial success."I am not someone who talks about my number. That is the last thing on my mind when I am selecting a film. The day I start selecting a film on the possible commercial success that will be the end of my creativity. I feel that commercial interest stifles growth," he added.Inputs @ndtv, timesofindia   - Manohar
