Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s funding under watch May 06, 2015 13:14

After screwing Greenpeace India and the Ford Foundation, the home ministry has turned its gaze on to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the eponymous non-governmental organisation founded and run by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda. The home ministry is looking into the foundation's role into the funding of a prominent Indian health body following inputs received by it from intelligence agencies, but insisted the exercise was an informal one and is in preliminary stages. "It is not a formal inquiry. It's only a look into the affairs after certain information has come to our notice and we are in the process of checking it out," the home ministry official said. The official insisted that the exercise is different in intensity and scope from the ministry's recent actions against Greenpeace India, whose FCRA licence (which enables it to access foreign donations) has been suspended and Ford Foundation, which has been placed under the 'Prior Permission' category under which the government vets donations made by it to Indian organisations. A spokesperson for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said it was unaware of the home ministry's move. "We have not been approached by the government of India," the spokesperson said. The foundation is the largest private organisation of its kind in the world which is set up by Bill Gates in 2000 and is a major donor to many Indian NGOs and associations. Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), an American NGO was pulled up by a parliamentary standing committee in 2013 after the death of seven tribal girls in 2009 in Andhra Pradesh. PATH had conducted observation studies for cervical cancer using drugs and the study was sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation funds several organisations as part of its work on public health and all these organisations partner drug companies in some form or the other, raising questions of conflict of interest. Both Bill and Melinda Gates, are ranked among the most influential people in the world and were awarded the Padma Bhushan last January for their contribution to social work, a recognition that will likely to weigh on the government's demeanour towards their organisation.By Premji

Salman Khan convicted in 2002 hit and run case: faces jail May 06, 2015 12:12

A Mumbai sessions judge found Bollywood superstar Salman Khan guilty Wednesday of killing a homeless man in a 2002 hit-and-run after a night out drinking.Judge D W Deshpande convicted the 49-year-old of culpable homicide for crashing his SUV into a group of homeless men in Bandra, Mumbai and then fleeing the scene. Khan, who blamed his driver for the crash, faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and was expected to be taken into custody from the court.Khan was convicted in all eight charges, including the most serious charge of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' which could see him behind bars for up to 10 years.Judge D W Deshpande told Khan he was driving the SUV on that fateful night in Bandra when his car ran over people sleeping on the pavement, killing one and injuring four others. He also said Khan was drunk and had no licence to drive. The actor looked dejected and there were also tears in his eyes as the judge read out the verdict.Lawyers now are arguing before court on the quantum of punishment and the sentencing could also be later today. The trial in the case has seen many twists and turns, and today's decision is a bad hit to the Rs 200-crore riding on his films at the moment. A tight security blanket was thrown around the court where sessions judge D W Deshpande pronounced the judgement. Only lawyers, media personnel and court staff were allowed to be present. Last month, Judge Deshpande had asked Khan to be present in court today to hear the verdict. The 'Kick' actor was first tried under the lesser charge of 'rash and negligent driving' -- that carried a punishment of two years -- but a Bandra metropolitan magistrate in 2012 slapped the more serious offence of 'culpable homicide not amounting to murder' and transferred the matter to the sessions court. This fresh charge carried a punishment of up to 10 years. The actor had claimed he was not at the wheel at the time of the accident which killed one person and left four others injured on the night of September 28, 2002. While the prosecution had insisted a drunk Khan was driving the Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over the victims sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra, the actor claimed it was his driver Ashok Singh who was behind the wheel. Driver Singh has endorsed the defence's claim. The defence also argued that police had not obtained finger prints from the steering wheel to find out who was driving the vehicle. Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat had alleged that Khan was driving the vehicle after consuming Bacardi rum at a bar, a charge denied by the actor, who said he had just a glass of water.Nurullah Mehboob Sharif was killed in the accident while Kalim Mohammed Pathan, Munna Malai Khan, Abdullah Rauf Shaikh and Muslim Shaikh were injured. The defence also disputed the prosecution's contention that there were three persons in the vehicle--Khan, his police bodyguard Ravindra Patil and singer friend Kamal Khan, insisting that driver Ashok Singh was also present. - Manohar

IPL 2015 Mumbai Indians beats Delhi Daredevils by 5 wickets May 06, 2015 10:17

In a contest between dazzling strokemakers, Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu outshone Yuvraj Singh leading Mumbai Indians to a five-wicket victory against Delhi Daredevils at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.Mumbai got to the 153-run target in 19.3 overs as Rayudu (49*) was ably supported by Kieron Pollard (26*).Mumbai got off to an awful start when opener Lendl Simmons was trapped plumb in front of the wicket by Zaheer Khan on the second ball of their run chase and then Hardik Pandya was soon after dismissed by Nathan Coulter-Nile.The Mumbai run chase was twice interrupted by rain during short passages of play in which they lost the wickets of Parthiv Patel and Harbhajan Singh.Sharma and Rayudu added 60 runs for the fifth wicket to keep Mumbai in the hunt. Sharma smashed three sixes and two fours in his 37-ball 46 before he was clean bowled by Amit Mishra.Sharma's dismissal brought Pollard to join Rayudu at the crease and the duo took the hosts to victory. In a game marred by stoppages due to rain, Mumbai seemed to have lost their way early in the innings. However, after the second rain break, Sharma and Rayudu played with a calm head on their shoulders to resurrect the innings.Even after Sharma was dismissed, Rayudu and Pollard held their nerve to take them home.Pollard landed the decisive blow by thwacking Mishra for a six in the final over as Mumbai climbed to the fourth spot in the points table with their fourth consecutive win.Yuvraj rose to the occasion with a stroke-filled 57 off 44 balls. Earlier, Yuvraj struck a brilliant half-century to lift Delhi Daredevils to a challenging score of 152/6.Yuvraj, the costliest buy at the players' auction at Rs 16 crore, has been woefully out of form barring a score of 54 against Kings XI Punjab at Pune and a lot was expected from him to rally Delhi when they slumped to 50/3 inside 7 overs after electing to bat.The left-handed batsman rose to the occasion with a stroke-filled 57 off 44 balls that included two successive leg-side sixes off Mitchell McClenaghan and seven fours before he departed slashing Lasith Malinga in the last ball of the penultimate over.Delhi's batting was, on the whole, disappointing with skipper Jean-Paul Duminy making the second best score of 28.For Mumbai, Harbhajan Singh was easily the outstanding bowler with superb figures of 2/11 in four overs while Malinga got 2/33. McClenaghan was expensive without a wicket to his name while Jagadeesha Suchith and Hardik Pandya took the other two wickets.Delhi started on the wrong foot when Mayank Agarwal hung his bat out to the first ball from Malinga and edged behind. The duo of captain Duminy and youngster Shreyas Iyer raised hopes of another fight-back when the South African smashed a straight six with good timing off Vinay Kumar and Iyer followed suit by taking 14 runs off McClenaghan.Iyer hit two lofted fours and was lucky when Suchith and Pandya clashed at cover point while chasing a leading edge and reprieved the youngster on 10.And when Duminy swung Vinay Kumar for a second six over mid-wicket followed by a straight-driven four, the score had jumped to 43 off five overs. The introduction of spin in the form of Harbhajan Singh paid rich dividends when Iyer needlessly tried a shot off the first ball and got a leading edge to be taken by Vinay Kumar. At the end of power play, Delhi were 44/2.Duminy, who was looking for a big score, was deceived by Suchith in the next over and drove back to the bowler who anticipated well and grabbed the return catch to leave Delhi struggling at 50/3.Yuvraj, who had trouble reading Harbhajan, and Kedar Jadhav forged a stand of 28 to steady the innings before the latter came out of his crease premeditatedly to the wily off-spinner and was easily stumped as Delhi were reduced to 78/4 in the 12th over.Angelo Mathews joined Yuvraj and the duo took the score past the 100 mark but once again Mumbai made a dent when the former holed out to long off after lofting Pandya for a huge six the previous ball.It was left to Yuvraj to take Delhi to a competitive total and he struck Malinga for three fours in successive balls in the 17th over -- two of those authentic ones in typical Yuvraj style -- and 15 runs were added to the total.Yuvraj then swung McCleghan for a one-legged six over fine leg and then flicked the bowler when he bowled full for another leg-side six in the next over to complete his second half century of the season in 40 balls, with the help of two sixes and seven fours.Yuvraj finally fell after surviving a caught behind appeal off the previous delivery which was taken on the half volley by stumper Parthiv Patel. His stand with Saurabh Tiwary (13 not out) was worth 41 runs. The last five overs were productive for Delhi and yielded 57 runs. - Manohar

An engineering graduate from Hyderabad, who joined the terror group ISIS, has died "while fighting in Syria," Intelligence sources on Tuesday said quoting his family members.Mohd Haneef Waseem, 27, had reportedly joined the ISIS in Syria in February this year, they said. The Telangana Police are in the process of gathering more information about Haneef's alleged links with Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). They are also trying to find out how he could have gone to Syria."We are collecting more information and the process in this regard is on," a top Intelligence officer said."He (Haneef) completed engineering degree from Hyderabad around four years back. He later went to London where he completed his masters course. In February this year, he left for Syria from London. He seems to have joined the Islamic State in Syria where he died," the officer told PTI."How he died we do not know...while fighting or in landmine blast or accidental death, we are not sure, but he died in March and the same was informed to his family members around 10 days back, who stay in Rajendra Nagar here," the officer said, adding that Haneef's family members in turn informed the matter to police. The family, native of Mancherial town at Adilabad district in Telangana and settled in Hyderabad for past few years, was informed about Haneef's death through an SMS in Arabic language, which they got translated, he said.Asked about reports that Haneef had taken another youth of Karimnagar district along with him to Syria, the Intelligence officer said, "He was all alone."It appears that he might have joined the IS after getting attracted to it through social media, he said.To a question about the youth's body, he said, "It seems they (IS) themselves might have buried it."Last year, Hyderabad Police had foiled "attempts" by six youths from the city, including two engineers and a former Google employee, who were allegedly plotting to join the ISIS ranks after getting attracted to the terror group's propaganda on social networking sites.Besides, a 19-year-old woman from the city who was residing in Qatar and had flown to Turkey, allegedly wanted to join the ISIS but had come back to India in December last year after seeing the conditions there, police had earlier said. - Manohar

GST bill, BJP - Congress reaches consensus May 05, 2015 18:04

In major relief for the NDA government, Congress has assured that it will support the Goods and Services Tax bill, which means it will clear the parliament with the two-thirds majority which is needed for a constitutional amendment. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in Parliament, "I beseech you, clear GST," while appealing to the opposition parties not to stall the legislation that will give effect to a unified tax regime in the country. He appealed that all parties have to come together in national interest and suggested that the GST Bill should not be sent to a parliamentary committee for review anymore. The Finance Minister stressed that any more delay in passing the bill, which changes the constitution, would mean setting back GST by another year as the deadline of April 2016 for a roll-out cannot be met.Senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily said his party will support the GST bill because it was the idea of his government, which was led by the Congress. "This bill has gone through the standing committee for two and a half years; it has been before dozens and dozens of empowered committees. Only then has a consensus happened. I beseech you rise above party considerations," Mr Jaitley said in the House, also pointing out that “If all our CMs agree why are we delaying it? And that means your states will suffer." The Budget Session for the Lok Sabha ends in three days. The Rajya Sabha will close on May 18.  A vote on the bill is expected tomorrow in Lok Sabha after a discussion. The clearing of GST bill will be a great step forward by the NDA government. This will lead to benefit the states in a large scale. The floor management of the NDA was successful in romping in more supporters to get the bill passed. GST bill brings in revolutionary benefita to the state as well as for the consumers. This will help to have a uniform tax regime throughout the country.By Premji

Image talk : Balayya's Lion May 05, 2015 17:40

After Legend 400 days function, Balayya and his fans are looking forward for Lion's release, most of them are expecting a thundering success again. The film is getting released for this Summer and the movie team now released a new image from the film which shows Balayya in a most stylish appeal. In the image, Balayya is seen with a beard and in a military hair style. After a long time, he is seen in this stylish avatar. He holds a weapon in his hand and watching the ground. Though it is not specified, it can be clearly understood that there might be a villain on that ground and it is an action scene. Coming to the beard, it is a trend in Tollywood to put it for hero if the concerned film has a powerful flash back, so that the director wishes to show the variance in hero for the flash back and in the present. Movies like Narasimha Naidu, Samara Simha Reddy are the biggest hits in Balayya's career for the powerful flash back in it and in that sense, even Lion has to be a hit if the guess behind the beard is right.
