NRI exhibition reveals about why Sikhs wear turban, beard May 02, 2016 15:42

Because of the distinct identity of Sikhs- beard and turban, they are till date, in the US, are more likely to face profiling, bigotry and backlash, than the average American. To erase this situation and spread better awareness about Sikhism, a new Sikh art exhibit is planned in New York, to showcase the pride taken by the community in their religious and cultural practices. The exhibition is yet to be scheduled. UK-based photographers Amit and Naroop will click the pictures of Sikh Americans under "The Sikh Project" mounted by The Sikh Coalition. On the 15th anniversary of 9/11, all these pictures would be unveiled. The Coalition in US, is the largest Sikh American advocacy and community development organization, which also works towards the realization of civil and human rights for all the people, especially Sikhs. The two photographers said that they are “very excited” about their upcoming exhibition. “We are very excited! In the US, it will serve as an educational piece as well as an art project as the awareness of the Sikh identity is still misunderstood; so we are hoping it will have a wider impact,” they said. Beauty, style and symbolism of the Sikh articles of faith, which will be explored by the photography exhibit, will also include both turbaned men and women and also feature iconic Sikh Americans and a few selected winners, in a combination. When asked about the “Sikh Project”, the two photographers said that they got the idea in 2013, when they “noticed men of different backgrounds and ages growing beards for fashion, as part of their identity.”"Being Sikh photographers, we wanted to show that in our culture, the beard has been a part of the Sikh identity for hundreds of years."Saying that their UK exhibition got "overwhelming response" and "respect" for the message it was giving and for its execution process. "The content and context resonated with people from different backgrounds as it is not just about Sikh's, it's about pride for your identity".Amit and Naroop, who earlier worked in the US, want their latest project to "stand up to the UK Singh Project and if anything even better than it.""In the UK, we have witnessed how powerful art can be in positively educating the broader public about the Sikh community. We can't wait to begin photographing the Sikh American experience and sharing those stories with the world as well."The two photographers partnering with the Sikh Coalition, are currently in search of additional photography candidates and also asked all Sikh Americans, regardless of age and gender, to take part in the exhibition. The deadline date for the entry was completed yesterday. According to Coalition's Executive Director, Sapreet Kaur, "The goal with bringing this project to the United States is the opportunity to combat bigotry by sharing a positive narrative of Sikhs in America through portraits and the incredible stories behind them."In response to the continuous attacks on Sikh Americans in US, the Coalition was founded by volunteers on September 11, 2001.Opining that there was a fantastic response, the two said, “The subjects involved have seen the success we have had, so they are excited to be involved. It's the complete opposite of the UK Singh project as nobody wanted to be involved at first and it took a while for it to build momentum.”"Each one of the subjects has a story to tell, which will sit alongside the portrait. Some are positive, some are more dramatic, but through the stories, visitors of the exhibition will get to learn what it means to be an American Sikh, both in identity and also in spirit."“An accompanying video interview of each subject will allow visitors of the exhibition to learn more about the way Sikhs are treated, both positively and negatively, and the courage it takes for the subjects to continue to wear their articles of faith,” they said. The project, they said, is a fusion of their Sikh heritage and British upbringing."It is traditional in content but the execution is modern and contemporary. Hopefully this has allowed it to spread to a wider audience. Has it been successful? It's hard to judge. People have to be open to learn and understand other faiths and identities."All we can do is to try our best to spread the message. From the response we have had, it appears to have done the job, but there are always more people to reach."By Phani Ch

Harbhajan Singh, Ambati Rayudu in ugly verbal spat May 02, 2016 11:04

29th match in IPL 2016, being conducted with Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians, has witnessed an ugly spat between Harbhajan Singh and Ambati Rayudu. The two MI players were spotted in ugly situation in the 11th over of the Pune innings, when Rayudu failed in stopping a boundary hit by Saurabh Tiwary off Harbhajan despite a brilliant dive near the boundary rope. Harbhajan who could not take this, was spotted abusing his team-mate, which was sparked the altercation between both the cricketers. Rayudu, who is in no mood of taking it on lighter mode, gave him back and charged towards Harbhajan, to counter him. But the matured Sikh player tried to pacify Rayudu, unwilling to create the ugly atmosphere. The sportive personalities, however, were later seen celebrating with each other, after Harbhajan dismissed Peter Handscomb in his next over. It is to be recollected, that, in IPL’s first edition, Harbhajan had allegedly slapped pacer S Sreesanth, after MI's defeat to Kings XI Punjab. Even Rayudu has a history of such on-field outburst. Rs. 5 in letter: Jharkhand’s villagers post to Modi May 02, 2016 09:53

Jharkhand villagers sent Rs. 5 enclosed in a letter to the Prime Minister’s office in Delhi. Latehar district residents sent those letters to the PM, protesting against the low increase of wages from Rs. 162 to Rs. 167 per day, that too in the drought season. Villagers opined that, Rs. 5 increase in wages has actually insulted them. “The government has done us a big favour perhaps by increasing the wages. In some other states, I am told, the increase is not even that,” said 65-year-old Kamlesh Oraon, a marginal farmer. “But we cannot accept such a raise. It is too little. So we are sending the money back to the prime minister... Maybe he'll have some use for it.” Jharkhand Chief Minister from BJP, Raghubar Das, in the recent March, sought Centre, to release the due NREGA funds immediately. Workers said that, they are not paid any wages for more than three months. Economist Jean Dreze, one of the architects of the MNREGA act said, as the drought was severe, NREGA could have been a great relief. “NREGA was meant to be a saviour for the poor. But there are no funds. It is not a good thing at all,” he said. Commenting upon the wage hike, Dreze said, the increase by Rs. 5 after a number of requests was a textbook case of too little too late. “The wages should have been raised to at least Rs. 300 in these times,” he opined. The issue is now on full heat among the villagers, Unless the Prime Minister personally intervenes and solves the issue, it is tough to comeback to the normal. By Phani Ch

AP special status: TDP, BJP declare war on each other May 02, 2016 09:48

Special status issue has been a big reason for raising a new fire in between TDP and BJP leaders. While the ruling TDP is blaming BJP by raking up key issues like non-release of promised central funds and special status, the BJP at a meeting in Kadapa yesterday, declared war against TDP, taking Rayalaseema issues as the weapon. BJP leaders said that, on May 5th, they would visit Srisailam dam backwaters and also plan to take the state government to task for locating all the projects and schemes in the coastal districts, while neglecting Rayalaseema. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is unhappy with the Centre, for not keeping up the promises made in the AP Reorganization Act. Reportedly, Naidu recently commented that the Supreme Court had come to the rescue of AP and did justice on the contentious sharing of assets and liabilities of state institutions listed in the 9th and 10th schedules of the AP Reorganisation Act but not the Centre though he has requested it to intervene for the last few months. Naidu said that, he has visited Delhi 30 times and represented AP’s issues, but Centre is least concerned about it. On May 4th in Delhi, the Niti Aayog will be holding a day-long meeting, to review the implementation of provisions in the AP Reorganization Act. Speculations are now taking good hope, that BJP would soon join hands with YSRCP for 2019 elections, as the alliance with TDP has anyway turned ugly, with Naidu fighting against the Centre for the special status and several other issues. “If the reports that the TD wants to move away from us is true, it is unfortunate. We never tried to weaken the TD. In fact we have pumped a lot of funds to AP and we never betrayed mitra dharma. We are not for moving out of the alliance, we know that the Central funds that have been sanctioned have not been spent for the intended purpose,” AP State BJP president and Visakhapatnam MP K. Haribabu said. But Mr Vishnuvardhan Reddy said, “So far, we have been a bit hesitant in attacking TD, but we will not tolerate the manner in which the ruling party has been going at us. We know how to expose the state government. As part of it at the meeting at Kadapa today, we decided to take up agitations against the state government for the injustice it is doing to Rayalaseema.” By Phani Ch

Kabali, Brahmotsavam teasers get divided talk! May 02, 2016 08:53

Super Star Rajinikanth’s Kabali movie teaser and Mahesh Babu’s Brahmotsavam teaser have been released on Sunday, trending in the social networking sites all the day. But it seems, both the teasers have got mixed response. While few say, the teasers are just ok, others say, they are extraordinary. If Kabali teaser is considered, right from the beginning of the project, the makers have hinted that, Rajinikanth would be playing a don role. Since then, most of the fans started relating the role to that of Baasha movie, which was a trend setting one, in those days. But unlike the serious dark shaded Baasha, Super Star in Kabali was seen in bit active and entertaining role. However, Rajini’s style, background score all together gives a thumbs up, if it is not compared with Baasha. Coming to Brahmotsavam, Madhuram Madhuram song teaser released yesterday is being applauded for the soothing music. But the shots of Mahesh, as shown in Brahmotsavam first teaser were repeated in latest teaser too, hinting a negative sign to the movie. However, teasers cannot alone decide the fate of the movie, it should be seen, how far the two big movies would conquer this Summer. By Phani Ch
