Green tea and exercise may overturn Alzheimer’s May 06, 2015 20:38

According to a new study, it was revealed that, a compound found in green tea and voluntary exercise slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and may even reverse its effects. Alzeimers is a common disease found in many people nowadays with the symptoms like increased memory loss and confusion, agitation and a lack of concern for your environment and surroundings. The researchers have decided to investigate the effects of voluntary exercise and EGCG on memory function and A-beta levels in mice known to show plaque deposits and behaviour deficits. They administered EGCG in the drinking water of the mice and gave them access to running or exercise wheels and found remarkable improvements in the cognitive function and retention in the Alzheimer’s affected mice. Explaining the study, Todd Schachtman, professor of psychological sciences in the College of Arts and Science at University of Missouri stated that “In Alzheimer’s patients, amyloid-beta peptide (A-beta) can accumulate and clump together causing amyloid plaques in the brain. We looked at ways of preventing or postponing the onset of the disease which we hope can eventually lead to an improvement of health status and quality of life for the elderly, he added. By Lizitha

A hybrid of plane and helicopter May 06, 2015 20:12

Planes and helicopters have their strengths and weaknesses. Planes are fast and can carry a lot of stuff a long way, while helicopters are slow but they don’t need enormous runways and they’re extremely maneuverable. So naturally, people want to combine them. That’s why a team at NASA’s Langley Research Center is developing a drone that’s a hybrid of the two.The GL-10 Greased Lightning is a ten-engine, battery-powered prototype with a ten-foot wingspan that can change its shape midair to fly either horizontally or vertically. This month, NASA announced it recently took off vertically and, for the first time, successfully rotated its wings to transition from “helicopter” mode to standard “wingborne” flight. The GL-10 is a relative of the V-22 Osprey, the VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft developed in the 1980s for the US Air Force and Marines. It’s a tiltrotor design: The engines rotate to propel the aircraft either up and down (like a helicopter), or forward (like a propeller-driven plane). The Osprey can take off and land from the deck of a carrier or from a field in the middle of the jungle, instead of from a lengthy runway. It can haul 32 troops or 20,000 pounds of internal cargo up to 2,200 miles. It’s very handy.Because VTOL capability has proven useful on big planes, the US is naturally trying it out on smaller aircraft, like the GL-10. There are four motors on each wing that are controlled together, with two more on the tail that are also controlled together. It’s controlled like a standard triple-engined aircraft such as the MD-11, with three separate throttle controls: two for the the engines on each wing, plus another for the tail.NASA hopes the GL-10 design will be the basis for drones addressing a wide variety of use cases. “It could be used for small package delivery … long endurance surveillance for agriculture, mapping and other applications,” says Bill Fredericks, an aerospace engineer with NASA. The team has built 12 prototypes, including 5-pound (foam) and 25-pound (fiberglass) models, as well as the 55-pound carbon fiber version shown in the video above. Some early versions were lost to hard landings as the team perfected flight controls, but the current version seems to be performing very well.Next up are be more tests to confirm the aerodynamic efficiency of the Greased Lightning. The team believes the concept is four times more aerodynamically efficient in cruise mode than a helicopter, thanks to its wings and forward-facing props. So if Amazon does ever get around to delivering our packages by flying robot, it won’t have to burn so much fuel doing it. - Manohar

Delhi poor kids are more likely to die than rich kids May 06, 2015 20:07

According to a survey conducted in Delhi, it was revealed that the urban poor are 3.2 times more likely to die compared with the urban rich. The survey proved that global under-five mortality rate has cut down by half from 90 to 46 deaths per 1,000 live births between 1990 and 2013 and the success story includes India. During same period, the country has recorded decline of 54.4 % as against global process of 44.8 percent, according to the report "The Urban Disadvantage", prepared by NGO Save the Children. The urban child survival gap between the rich and the poor urban kids in 36 developing countries shows that, in the age group 0-5 years, the urban poor are 3.2 times more likely to die compared with the urban rich in Delhi, according to the report. It also states that the quality of life of mothers and children in the urban slums of Delhi is one of the worst city in the world and the health inequity between the rich and the poor is stark.Union Minister Najma Heptullah said that "We used to feel that more children are not being taken care of in rural areas. But this report proves otherwise”. She said that the health of urban children was an important issue as by 2030 a significant amount of population will be moving to cities. People living in slums and congested areas face a lot of health issues due to poor sanitation and congestion.Rwanda, Cambodia, Kenya, Vietnam, Peru, India, Madagascar, Ghana, Bangladesh and Nigeria are the countries showing the greatest survival divide between wealthy and poor urban children. The director of programs of Save the Children, Sudeep Gadok said: "The government of India has made great progress in ensuring the survival of newborns, infants and mothers." But according to the report asserts, the gap between the life chances for mothers and children must be reduced by taking necessary measures. By Lizitha

Former US President Bill Clinton says that he won't stop paid speeches May 06, 2015 19:39

Former US President Bill Clinton shakes hands with the crowd after the 20th Remembrance Ceremony, the anniversary ceremony for victims of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Former US President Bill Clinton said on Monday he would continue to give paid speeches while his wife, Hillary Clinton, runs for president amid criticism of the income her family draws from people, including foreigners, with business before the US government. He also said he may consider stepping down or taking "less of an executive role" at the Clinton Foundation should his wife become president. The Clintons' political opponents have criticized the foundation for accepting funding from foreign governments for its endowment and for its charitable work abroad."I gotta pay our bills," Clinton told NBC News from Kenya when asked about his speeches, for which he sometimes charges more than $500,000, in an interview taped over the weekend. "We do our best to vet them. And I have turned down a lot of them. If I think there's something wrong with it, I don't take it."His decision to emerge from the sidelines and speak out about the Clinton Foundation reflects concerns about getting Hillary Clinton's campaign for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination back on a sound footing after it took a pounding in recent weeks. The former first lady, also a previous secretary of state and former senator from New York, has attempted to present herself as a candidate who would fight for everyday Americans. But her campaign has been on the defensive over questions about foreign donations to the family's charitable organization and whether her work as President Barack Obama's first-term secretary of state was influenced by the donations. In response to the attacks, her campaign plans to unveil a website, called "The Briefing, which it described as a "one-stop shop to provide the facts about Hillary Clinton's positions and her record."Campaign Chairman John Podesta said in an Internet posting that the website would provide the public with direct access to Clinton's policy agenda "as well as the facts needed to debunk false attacks."Scrutiny of the Clinton Foundation has focused on foreign donations as well as on Bill Clinton. The former president described the controversy as old news."There's been a very deliberate attempt to take the foundation down," Clinton said."There is no doubt in my mind that we have never done anything knowingly inappropriate in terms of taking money to influence any kind of American government policy," Clinton said. "That just hasn't happened." There was nothing sinister in getting wealthy people around the world to donate to a charity that focuses on helping poor people, he said. The Clinton Foundation and an associated charity confirmed to Reuters in March for the first time that they failed to adhere to central parts of an ethics agreement Hillary Clinton signed with the White House that required heightened transparency while she was secretary of state.A State Department spokesman said on Monday the department was "not aware of any evidence" that donations to the foundation influenced the actions that Clinton took as secretary of state. - Manohar
