Visa extension denied for Chinese journalists July 25, 2016 12:51

Chinese media, which is familiar with journalists being thrown out of Beijing, has accused India of "having a suspicious mind" and has threatened it with "serious consequences", for expelling three of its journalists.India has expelled the Chinese journalists because it believed that they were impersonating people to gain access to sensitive and restricted areas and were therefore a security threat. The state-run Global Times pooh-poohed these reports and said that New Delhi's real reason was to take "revenge due to the Nuclear Suppliers Group membership issue". “If India is taking revenge due to the NSG membership issue, there will be serious consequences,” the editorial in the Global Times said.“There were reports that India expelled the journalists because it believed they were mocking people to gain access to restricted areas and hence were a security threat in Delhi and Mumbai. Also, there were reports of meeting Dalai Lama,” stated the editorial."On the visa issue this time, we should take actions to display our reaction. We at least should make a few Indians feel Chinese visas are also not easy to get," Global Times wrote."Crowned by Western public opinion as the world's biggest democracy, the Indians have a strong sense of pride," Global Times wrote. “The act has sent a negative message to China and communication between the two countries will be affected,” stated the editorial. The journalists were impersonating people and meeting with Tibetan activists exiled from China, Global Times quoted one of its own former India-based journalists as saying there was "absolutely no need for" Chinese journalists to impersonate anyone."It is completely normal for reporters to request interviews with the Dalai Lama group," said Lu Pengfei, former India-based special correspondent with the Global Times, according to the article. "No matter whether Chinese reporters apply for a long-term or a temporary journalist visa, they will come across many troubles. Complaints about difficulties of acquiring an Indian visa have also been heard from other Chinese who deal with India. In contrast, it's much easier for Indians to get a Chinese visa," it added.By Premji

Three day bus service by Congress eyeing UP elections July 23, 2016 15:15

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi has flagged off a three-day bus yatra named “27 Saal UP Behaal” from the party headquarters on Saturday aiming at the Uttar Pradesh elections. Along with senior leaders, its general secretary in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad, the newly-appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar and the party's chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit will travel across the state in the bus to deliver their electoral message.“This time people in Uttar Pradesh want development. They see the BJP, BSP and the Samajwadi Party as parties which create a divide. We want clean politics in Uttar Pradesh and this is our main agenda,” Azad said. "The Congress Party respects and represents all religions and this is our message to the people of Uttar Pradesh," he added.“The aim is to highlight the failures and misgovernance by the successive governments of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and BJP in UP for last 27 years,” UP Congress campaign committee chairperson Sanjay Singh said.“The yatra will propagate the message to the people of Uttar Pradesh on the failures and misgovernance by successive governments of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and BJP in Uttar Pradesh for the last 27 years,” he said, adding that “we will campaign in such a way that we reach out to every voter at least three or four times”.Singh said that the yatra will be followed by a meeting of the state unit, which will be chaired by Rahul, in Lucknow on July 29. The Congress president will participate in a road show in Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on August 2."The Congress Party was there in power at the Centre for 60 years. During that time, they deteriorated the condition of our country. From other parties, they are now asking for the amount of work done. But they never give an account of what they did in the 60 years when they were in power," mocking at the Congress bus yatra, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said."It was there in power in Uttar Pradesh for most of the time except for 27 years. No development took place during their regime in the state and they are now seeking an explanation from the other parties. All these tricks of the Congress will not work and no matter how many rallies they conduct, the people of Uttar Pradesh are not going to fall in their trap as they know the reality," he added.By Premji

Hillary Clinton chose Tim Kaine as VP July 23, 2016 14:48

Hillary Clinton has picked Tim Kaine as her choice for Vice President. There are different views in favour and against the choice. Most delegates of the Democratic National Convention gave  positive reviews to Hillary Clinton’s choice for vice president, saying that he will appeal to moderates, but do little to soothe disenchanted Bernie Sanders supporters.Clinton made her choice public on Friday, tweeting "I'm thrilled to announce my running mate, @TimKaine, a man who's devoted his life to fighting for others. -H." Within minutes Kaine confirmed his acceptance, tweeting, "Just got off the phone with Hillary. I'm honoured to be her running mate. Can't wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!"Kaine has been a civil rights lawyer who is also a progressive Christian in a toss-up state that has gradually turned Democratic after decades of Republican stranglehold. Many of those immigrants are from India and in fact, they played a key role in propelling Kaine to the Senate in 2012. The constituency has been assiduously cultivated by Kaine and he was very conscious of when he gently admonishes India of its responsibilities towards minorities, citing America's own obligation towards its minorities and immigrants."Virginia has a strong and vibrant Indian-American community representative of the close personal, business and educational bonds between our two nations - world's two largest democracies. Some members of the Indian-American community in Virginia, many of whom are Sikh, have expressed concerns about issues of religious tolerance and liberty in India. I hope that Prime Minister Modi continues the efforts to better protect the inalienable rights afforded to all people, just as we fight against expressions of religious intolerance in our own political climate," Kaine said in a statement last month, after praising Modi's address to the joint meeting of the US Congress.Angie Morelli, a Sanders delegate from Nevada, said Kaine was a horrible pick. “In a time when she is trying to cater to Sanders supporters, it was more catering to conservative voters and she’s not going to get any wave from it.”Dwight Bullard, a Florida state senator, said not one of the 70-plus Sanders delegates in his state including himself is happy with the selection. “If you bring in someone with great credentials, that’s fine, but inclusivity of the progressive agenda can be a more important message,” Bullard said.Donald Trump’s campaign has already given a nickname for Hillary Clinton’s new running mate - “Corrupt Kaine.” The Trump campaign calls Virginia Senator Tim Kaine “ethically challenged,” citing a Politico report that he accepted $160,000 in gifts from 2001 to 2009, when he was Virginia’s lieutenant governor and governor.Trump’s senior communications adviser Jason Miller said, “the Status Quo ticket of Clinton-Kaine wants us to believe in a rigged system that enriches them at your expense.”By Premji

MEA confirms no Indian casualty in Munich shooting incident July 23, 2016 12:15

An 18-year-old German-Iranian national has opened fire in Munich’s Olympia mall, killing nine and injuring 16 others before shooting himself dead. Armed with a handgun, the attacker had opened fire at a nearby McDonalds restaurant, before carrying out the rampage in Olympia Mall. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. The Indian Embassy in Germany tweeted saying that all Indians in Munich are safe and they could reach out to the consulate in case of ‘any difficulty’. No Indian casualty has been reported from the Munich shooting where a lone gunman has killed at least nine people and later shot himself. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had spoken to Indian Ambassador in Germany and confirmed that no Indian has been harmed in the attack. The shooter opened fire near a fast-food restaurant and then again at the nearby Olympia shopping center in the north of the Bavarian capital, just before 6 p.m. local time (1600 UTC). Police at one point engaged and shot at him, only for him to escape. They later found him dead, killed by a self-inflicted gunshot. Munich police chief Hubertus Andra described the operation as "without doubt my most difficult day" in the role. "Three youngsters" were among the dead, Andra said, while children were also among the injured. "The motive, and the background of the crime are still totally unclear, the investigators are working full tilt and will continue into the night," Andrä said, adding that the process should move relatively quickly, as police were confident that they had identified the suspect. Defining whether the shooting was a case of somebody running amok, or an act of terror, would require more information on a possible motive, he said. Initially, police had worked on the assumption of "up to three" shooters; Andrä said that eyewitness reports forced police to presume that more than one person was involved. Two people had left the scene at speed in a car, prompting suspicion, but police investigated them: "They have nothing to do with the incident," police chief Andrä said. French President Francois Hollande called the shooting a "terrorist attack" and a "disgusting act that aims to foment fear in other European countries.""Solidarity with Germany in the challenge they are facing at the moment," wrote French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.By Premji
