Restrictions to be imposed on Zahida after misconduct

The jail authorities of the Indore district jail are thinking of imposing more restrictions on Zahida pervez who has been serving a jail term after being convicted in the Shehla Masood murder case after she misbehaved with the staff of the prison. Shehla Masood was an RTI activist who was killed by Zahida. With the news of her misconduct doing rounds in the jail, authorities may reflect upon preventing her from using the phone to talk and meeting the outsiders in the prison.

On 18 August, she had refused to follow the queue for fillling the plates in the evening. This had irked the other inmates who all protested against her for not following the queue.  After they all broke out, Zahida had flung the dal served on her plate at the prison staff.

The staff is now mulling restrictions on her for indiscipline as specified in the jail manual according to which she may be deprived of her benefits to talk over the phone with her kin (incoming calls only), a facility which was introduced by the government on August 15 to all those who were convicted by the trail courts in districts and sub-jails. The restrictions would soon be made official though Zahida had realized her mistake and apologized. "However, action will have to be taken to enforce discipline in the prison and avoid such incidents in future", an official from the jail administration said.
