Doctors on trail, lipo patient succumbs post-surgery

Two Doctors were on trial for not assessing the repercussions on an overweight patient who succumbed after liposuction surgery.

Two doctors in Dubai were being questioned foe liposurgery performed on a patient, who later succumbed. In June 2010, a Brazilian surgeon and an Indian anaesthetist performed an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck on 39-year-old mother-of-six children. The cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and fat, was performed on the Emirati women. But the women died after complaining severe chest pain and shortness of breath.

Dubai Court of Misdemeanor heard that the Emirati women died the day after having 23kg of stomach wall and fat removed from her body. The defendants claim that the patient was warned that the procedure was a risky one given her weight and inactive lifestyle, but she insisted on going ahead with the surgery.

“I told the doctor that only few surgeons in the entire world could carry out this procedure safely, because of how overweight the patient was, but he said he could do it,” the Indian doctor was quoted as saying in official records. The records did not state the patient’s weight when she went in for surgery. The anaesthetist said the surgery lasted for five hours after which the patient was admitted to the ICU where she later died. He did not turn up at court yesterday, while the Brazilian pleaded not guilty to the charge. The case has been adjourned.  (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
