PC accused of favoring ex-clients, BJP bent upon dismissal

Justice being twisted under political pressure, as the case of a Delhi based hotelier, in which the Home Minister P Chidambaram had shown much interest had come into limelight with wide range of controversies and criticism from the oppositions. The parties which were vying for the HM’s skin in the 2G scam got another opportunity in the Delhi case to pressurize the union government for his dismissal. Having lost the civic polls in a bad way, back at home the HM seems to be buried under piling disasters.

The Delhi government maintained a different stand on the Hotelier case and the Lieutenant- Governor Tejendra Khanna on Thursday, revoked the order and revised the recommendation “that withdrawal of prosecution in respect of the above cases may not be pressed before the competent court''.

Allegations were leveled against Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram of favoring over the issue of withdrawal of FIRs against a Delhi-based hotelier, his former client. Thereafter, the Home Department said: “On further detailed examination of the contents of the relevant charge sheets by the Director of Prosecution, a recommendation from him was received on December 12, 2011.''

Earlier the BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters, `This is a very serious matter. In matters concerning justice, nothing can be more serious. Chidambaram has misused his authority as home minister and ordered withdrawal of cases against Gupta... He is not only guilty of improper conduct but also criminal offence. A criminal cannot be Home Minister.’ The opposition alleged that Chidambaram, an eminent lawyer, had represented Gupta in the three cases in the past and unsuccessfully tried to get the FIRs quashed by the Delhi high court and the Supreme Court.

Seeking to stay clear of the controversy surrounding the issue, the Home Department said a representation was received from S.P. Gupta, chairman of Sunair Hotels Limited, New Delhi, regarding withdrawal of cases against the chairman and directors of the company vide FIR No. 90/2000 and 99/2000 at Connaught Place police station and of FIR No. 148/2002 at Defence Colony police station registered by the Delhi Police through the Union Home Ministry on May 9, 2011.
