World’s largest family in Mizoram, doctrines polygamy

BigFamilyThe happiest man Ziona Chana is a 66-year-old man in India's remote northeast Mizoram, who has 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren with vision to persuade more. This fairly unorthodox family lives in the Baktwang village in the Indian state of Mizoram. They all live in a four storied building with 100 rooms in a mountainous village in Mizoram, sharing borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, media reports said. "I once married 10 women in one year," he was quoted as saying. The dinner for 'The World's Biggest Family' is usually 30 chickens, 132lb of potatoes and 220lb of rice. All the cooking is done over an open fire kept burning throughout the day.

The family system is reportedly based on 'mutual love and respect. He has 94 children, 14-daughters-in-law and 33 grandchildren.

He keeps the youngest women near to his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping further away - and there is a rotation system for who visits Mr Chana's bedroom. His wives share a dormitory near Ziona's private bedroom and locals said he likes to have seven or eight of them by his side at all times.

One of his sons insisted that Mr Chana, whose grandfather also had many wives, marries the poor women from the village so he can look after them.  The family is organised with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organising her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals.

Mr Chana said Today I feel like God's special child. He's given me so many people to look after. I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the world's largest family.' His polygamous religious sect has 4,000 members, says he has not stopped looking for new wives. He heads a local Christian religious sect, called the "Chana", which allows polygamy. Formed in June 1942, the sect believes it will soon be ruling the world with Christ and has a membership of around 400 families.
