Railways to introduce satellite based internet on trains, ISRO gives nod
The passengers travelling on trains can now have an access to satellite Internet as the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) gave green signal to it. The railway official has briefed the media that they got clearance for using the frequency from KU band. He has said that this is for the first that satellite internet would be operative in moving trains.
It may be noted that railway proposed to introduce internet on trains. The proposal was kept pending for two years as ISRO was yet to give clearance then.
The officials have said that it’s going to be a pilot project that will be introduced on Rajdhani trains and passengers would be not charged for using internet. The railways have already sanctioned Rs. 6.30 crore for a Mumbai based company for providing internet on Howrah-Rajdhani.
Passengers can have access through wi-fi and antennas would be installed on coaches for receiving the signals. As per the procedure, TTE would give a number to the passenger and one would get the password (on his mobile) to access internet.
The railway officials have said that they would introduce this facility in other trains too in case the pilot project becomes successful. (Phani)
