SC sets up committee to look into norms for issuing SIM cards
The Supreme Court of India on Friday has set up an expert panel committee to guide the telecom firms and elucidate the procedure to the telecom companies before they allot SIM cards to the individuals.
A bench of the apex court headed by the Chief Justice S H Kapadia has said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would be submitting its report on the same within three months.
Acting on a plea filed by a person named Avishek Goenka asking the court to direct the government for framing the guidelines for issuing SIM cards, the court came out with this decision. The plea also stated the need for proper verification of the documents. The petitioner even stated that the probes into Delhi and Mumbai blasts came to a conclusion that the miscreants who used SIM cards brought them with fake documents.
Hereafter, getting SIM cards would be a tough affair for those without proper documents. Also, telecom companies should make sure that they should not give away SIM cards without obtaining proper documents only for developing their market. This would not only put the country in the problem, but also the telecom service provider. (Phani)
