50% of Indian women suffer from anemia: UNICEF

The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in its latest report has said that more than 50 per cent of women in India are suffering from anemia (lack of blood). The report also stated that most of the women are less than the average weights.

It has also mentioned that anemia is the major problem in 16 countries and the situation in India is worse compared to other countries, the report added. The nutritionists have said that anemia would create problems to pregnant women. Not just the mother but even the child will face health issues, said the report.

It's unfortunate that India shares its diaz with Nepal and Combodia in terms of women suffering from anemia.

The Government of India should take up necessary steps and educate women to have nutritious food. Further, it should also distribute vitamin and calcium tables for free in the rural areas. (Phani)
