Honour killings continue to hit headlines every now and then. In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father for dating a boy who belonged to a lower-caste. After killing the daughter, the accused tried to mislead the doctor and police stating that his daughter succumbed to tuberculosis.

The mother of the victim, however, revealed the truth and elucidated how the incident took place.  Nineteen-year-old Tabassum Khatun who hailed from Mumbai fell in love with 21-year-old Imran Khan, who was a paying guest to Khatun’s father.

The couple wished to share their lives together and even proposed their marriage wish to Khatun’s parents. They, however, disagreed as Khan reportedly belonged to lower-caste.

Khatun and Imran, nevertheless, didn’t end their affair there. On Sunday night Imran met Khatun in her room and accidentally they were caught in compromising position by her father Mohammed Kitabuddin Abdul Gafur Shah.

Having lost his temper on looking at the indecent meeting, Abdul Gafur Shah banged the head of the girl against the wall for a couple of times till his daughter fell unconscious. She was taken to the hospital next day but then the doctors declared her brought dead.

The police who investigated the case have told that the father tried to mislead them as her autopsy report revealed that she died of head injury. Abdul Gafur admitted to the crime when he was detained by the police. On the other hand, Khatun’s lover Imran Khan was said to be absconding. The police booked appropriate sections on the father.

Had Kitabuddin agreed to Khatun-Imraan’s wedding, he would not have lost his daughter.  There are n number of social evils in the guise of so called traditions that are still prevailing in the society. Everyone should come together and work towards a casteless society. (Phani)
