Quake kills 74 in Myanmar, injures many

JapanTwo weeks after Japan was devastated by the duo of earthquake and tsunami which killed nearly 27,000 people, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar late Thursday night killing 74 people, injuring more than 100 people and destroying 240 buildings.

Reports said the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured the magnitude of the quake as 6.8 on Richter scale and traced its epicenter to Hanoi. Bangkok and parts of China also suffered mild tremors, according to reports.

Thailand's meteorological department said in Bangkok it had recorded six large aftershocks following the initial quake. Residents in Chiang Rai city and surrounding villages ran out of their homes this morning following another tremor, news agencies said.

Four pagodas in the historic town of Chiang Saen near the northern Thailand border were damaged. In Chedi Luang, the10-ft long pinnacle crashed to the ground following the tremors.
