A new drug was developed by the scientists and they claim that this new molecule could help people lose weight and keep it off for a longer period than the contemporarily available drugs.

At the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in US, researchers has said that this drug has the capacity to increase the sensitivity of leptins, a hormone that has the ability to supress the appetite in the body. This was the study that they published in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Since the body would be sensitized to the naturalyy occurring leptin in the body it not just helps you in weight loss but also by maintaining it, said the author George Kunos.

Though leptin occurs in the body and naturaly supresses the appetite, the supplements have not been as effective in the supression. This has been due to the dessensitzation of the hormone in the body where the body no longer reacts to the leptin which is still present.

In the study, Kunos tested a new compound, JD5037, that targets cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1R) which doesn't enter the brain. The test was positve in obese mice while improving the metabolic health too. The common side effects like anxiety or other behavioural changes were not observed in the mice.
