Court finds Indian taxi driver guilty of raping passenger in Aus

An Indian taxi driver in Australia, who was accused of raping a female passenger in 2011, was on Monday found guilty of the offence. The Courier Mail reported that the 28-year-old taxi driver Jassar, who raped his passenger in Brisbane on April 12 last year was held guilty. The Brisbane District Court, which conducted the trial for up to four hours, held that Jassar raped Thai national after he found her in an inebriated state.

The court heard that the accused dropped two of the victim's friends after which he drove to Captain Burke Park. He then went into the back seat of his taxi and raped her. The prosecutor appealed to the Judge that at least six years of imprisonment should be awarded to Jassar. The court, however, deferred the hearing of sentence to Tuesday.
