Can the new Alto makeover woo buyers?

Maruti Suzuki's best selling car, Alto has received a major makeover and would be released as the new Alto in mid-October. However, the car like its previous versions would be released in the petrol variant only but with better fuel efficiency while packing more power in the 800 cc engine.

The Indian automaker had spent several billions while making changes to the engine for a better power packed performance while not neglecting the fuel-efficiency. Maruti says engineers have made considerable changes to the 800-cubic centimeter gasoline-engine car. The new Alto boasts of 15% higher fuel-efficiency compared to the while churning out 11% more torque with a slight increase in engine power. The gear shifting has also become smoother. But will all these factors and numbers bring back the diesel favoring customers to petrol?

The Maruti Suzuki Alto, new version offers 22.74 km for every liter of petrol in test-driving conditions making it the most fuel-efficient cars on road today in India. Hyundai Eon is a tough competitor in the same segment as it offers a mileage of 21.1 km per liter.

On the other hand, the diesel lovers have another greater option with extra comfort, the Mahindra Quanto, a MUV with a powerful diesel engine, more space and comfort at cheaper prices under Rs 6 lakh.

Analysts say that the new Alto has greater chances to be picked up with the new economic reforms which increased the prices of diesel by Rs 5, apart from allowing FDI in retail.

A strategically positive release date of October 16 has been set just before Diwali to ensure that more customers would book their new cars on the festive occasion. Car sales generally rise ahead of the festival because Hindus consider it to be an auspicious time to make new purchases.
