Supreme asks report on Clean Ganga

The Supreme Court of India has sought a report from the Union government on its 'Clean Ganga' initiative. Not satisfied the progress of 'Ganga Action Plan,' Supreme asked the Centre whether it would complete the project in this term or next term. Since 30 years, cleaning Ganga river has been an initiative by the previous government and so far Rs 2000 crores were spent.

However, the government's lawyer said, the project would be completed by 2018. About 118 towns along the river have been identified for the setting up of sewage treatment plants. Then the court directed the Centre to submit a status report on the progress of the sewage treatment plants.
