Facebook saves a student's life

In the recent past we have seen many people facing troubles with social networking site, Facebook but it actually gave a second life to a 20 year old Kolkata student. Going into the story, Halder was a normal college student whose life took a tragic turn when she was hospitalized with jaundice in March ending this year.

She was bed ridden and on May 27, doctors have shocked Halder's parents saying that she went into coma and need an urgent liver transplantation. The entire cost of operation would be around Rupees 30 lakhs but the middle class family was helpless. Halder's mother Babita agreed to give 65 percent of liver [about 900 grams] though she was not aware that liver will regenerate to normal dimensions after donation.  But it was Halder's friends who took up the responsibility of gathering the money.

With help of college teachers, Halder's friend launched a massive attack in Facebook and unexpectedly they got a huge response. They posted Halder's condition and her father's bank account details and within next three days over 18 lakhs was deposited by friends, acquaintances and strangers. Halder successfully under went liver transplantation operation and is currently on a one year leave from college.

Doctors have advised to take complete rest and the next six months are very crucial. Halder's father was stunned by the overwhelming response in Facebook and added that he will be truly grateful. “The challenge was all the more because it was an acute case [of viral Hepatitis A infection] and in such sudden cases, there is no time to plan. We did all the things within 36 hours,” added gastroenterologist Mahesh Goenka of Apollo Gleneagles Hospital who treated Halder.
