TN Transport Workers Union Begin Indefinite Strike

The Tamil Nadu transport corporation workers union started their indefinite strike from Sunday midnight, which left stranded thousands of passengers in the state.

The workers went on the strike, pressing for high wages, and perks to combat rising inflation and price rise. Very few staff members arrived for duty at the bus depots, resulting in most of the long-distance inter-state public transport services getting immobilized. Moreover, the who had to appear for their examination, scheduled at 10 am, lamented as their daily commute took around two hours. The students waiting at the Koyambedu bus stand appealed to the union leaders to allow buses to run, as otherwise they would miss the exam.

The transport workers went on strike, after four rounds of talks failed with the government. With the government-run buses largely off the road, the private transporters were looting the public, charging at double the regular fare.

The government would take strict action against private transporters, who were overcharging, said Transport Minister Vijayabhaskar. The government had engaged in retired bus drivers and conductors, and efforts were being made to run as many buses as possible. A skeletal bus service was also operating in the state.

On request, the Railways have started running several special trains, local and long distance ones, to deal with the crisis. The The E Palaniswami government also invited the unions for talks to end the agitation.
