SC Sentences Karnan To 6 Months Imprisonment For Contempt Of Court

The Calcutta High Court judge Justice C S Karnan, has been sentenced to a six months imprisonment, for contempt of court.

The SC also mentioned that its order need to be executed immediately, without any delay. The apex court also banned the media from publishing the content of orders passed by Justice C S Karnan last night. Karnan sentenced the Chief Justice of India, J S Khehar and the seven other judges of the SC to five years rigorous imprisonment.

The Bengal DGP has been ordered by the top court, to arrest Justice Karnan immediately.

On May 4, Justice Karnan refused to undergo a mental examination as ordered by the SC. Karnan instead stated that he was absolutely normal and had a stable mind. The apex court has taken suo motu cognizance of various letters written by Justice Karnan against judges of the Madras high court and the Supreme Court. It further restrained him from exercising administrative and judicial power from February 8.

Justice Karnan appeared before the SC on March 31, in connection with the contempt proceeding. Karnan became the first high court judge to do so in the history of Indian judiciary.
