Parliament Clears Maternity Leave Bill

In Loksabha, after a four hour debate, the Maternity Benefit Bill 2016 has been passed in the Parliament. There have been lot of arguments about maternity leave, children born in nuclear families and the stress on the mother. All the women working in organized sectors will avail maternity leave for 26 weeks which has been 12 weeks earlier. This will be applicable for only first two children and from the third child it will be reduced to 12 weeks.

In Maternity leave, India stands in third place next to Canada and Norway. Canada offers 50 weeks of maternity leave and Norway offers 44 weeeks. Bandaru Dattatreya, the Labour Minister piloted amendments to the old Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. This ensures maximum benefits for pregnant woman. The minister also requested the state governments to implement them on immediate basis.
