HCU: VC appeals to restore normalcy, Universities bandh

Interim Vice Chancellor of HCU, Vipin Srivastava made a second appeal in two days, to the students, to withdraw the protests and join the classes.

The heat of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide on January 17th, is still on.

Vipin made his recent appeal after one of the seven students on hunger strike, shifted to the university's health centre, after his health deteriorated. However, his condition was reportedly stable.

Meanwhile, 54 students who tried to take out a peace rally towards Tank Bund, were taken under police custody and were later released out.

Several students, under the banner of Osmania University JAC and University of Hyderabad JAC, assembled near the People's Plaza, to take out a 'peace' rally towards Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund.

Mr Srivastava has put an appeal on the university website saying that, the university activities have stopped completely due to the continued protests. This will lead to a delay in the completion of courses affecting the employment and higher education prospects of the students.

“Besides, disbursement of fellowships, scholarships and salaries (especially class IV and contract employees) is getting delayed inordinately,” he said in the appeal.

He further reminded that, the university has already taken two steps within its ‘realm’-  withdrawal of punishment given to the students and an ex-gratia of Rs. 8 lakh to Rohit’s  family.

After allegedly attacking the ABVP leader last year, Rohit and four other students were suspended last year by the HCU.

On the other side, HCU student JAC called for a bandh of all universities in the country.
