Dayanidhi Maran’s bail cancelled, have to surrender within three days

The Madras High Court on today has cancelled the anticipatory bail of former Union minister and DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran and gave him three days time to surrender. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had in July filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking cancellation of the interim anticipatory bail granted to the former Union telecom minister, because he is not co-operating with the investigation. Justice S Vaidyanathan of the Madras High Court has directed Maran to surrender before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) within three days.

CBI has registered a case accusing Maran, the then Chief General Manager (CGM), BSNL, K Bramhanathan and then CGM of Chennai Telephones MP Veluswami for allegedly entering into a criminal conspiracy and causing a huge financial loss to the government exchequer.

CBI has alleged that more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were installed at Maran's residence and is extended to his brother Kalanithi Maran's SUN TV channel to enable its uplinking, when he was the Telecom Minister from 2004-07.

It is alleged that a loss of over Rs 1.8 crore was caused to the exchequer by the misusing of such a large number of high-capacity ISDN lines to the Maran's Boat House Road residence in Chennai. His residence has turned into a "virtual telephone exchange" to facilitate the speedy transmission of programs by Sun TV which is owned by Maran's brother Kalanithi.

Mr Maran is also being charged with corruption in another case linked to his term as Telecom Minister. He has been accused of refusing crucial clearances to Aircel, a telecom, till the owner agreed to sell the firm to a Malaysia-based entrepreneur who had allegedly made a large investment in the Sun group in exchange.

After the cancellation of the bail. Maran faces the fear of arrest.
