Being Muslim, Yakub Memon is tortured - Owaisi

All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi made a controversial comment on Yakub Memon’s arrest saying that, he is being tortured because he is a Muslim.

Speaking to a public meeting in Hyderabad, Owaisi said, “it is unfortunate to know that the centre is being indulged in religious discrimination and said that, there are several cases, which are to be treated in the same way.

"The killers of Rajiv Gandhi and Beant Singh, Punjab Chief Minister, have the support of Tamil Nadu and Punjab political parties. As Yakub Memon has no such support, the law is able to corner him easily,” Owaisi said.

What is Yakub Memon case all about?

In 1993 Bombay serial blasts that left 257 dead and over 700 injured, Yakub is convicted. He even applied for mercy petition, which was found fruitless, after the Supreme Court rejected it, saying that, it did not fall within the principles laid down by the apex court.

In the plea, Memon specified that he was suffering from schizophrenia since 1996 and remained behind the bars for nearly 20 years. He had sought commutation of death penalty contending that a convict cannot be awarded life term and the extreme penalty simultaneously for the same offence.

As of now, Yakub Memon is likely to be executed on July 30th, but let us see whether Owaisi’s comments influences the law or not.
