Passenger Ship sinks with 458 aboard in China

A cruise Ship that carries 458 people aboard sank in China’s Yangtze River during a storm on Monday evening, authorities said.

Ten survivors have been rescued so far and the Hong Kong rescues teams are still trying to get recover bodies from the ship.

According to the Hubei Daily, a state-run newspaper, the survivors, including the Captain of the ship and Chief Engineer have been taken into the police custody. But the fate of the remaining people on the Cruise remains unanswered.

Images from the scene showed the ship upside down in the river, a section of its hull protruding above the surface of the water.

The vessel named Dongfangzhixing or “Eastern Star” was reported to have been traveling from Nanjing in eastern China to Chongqing, a city more than 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) inland. The voyage started by around 9:30 p.m. Monday during a storm over the section of the river that flows through the central province of Hubei.

As many as 406 passengers on board are believed to be Chinese, who got along with 47 crew members and five travel agency workers, according to state media.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other senior officials are travelling to the scene.

The rescue operations are getting hampered by bad weather, according to the news agency.

The Yangtze is the third-longest river in the world, stretching 6,300 kilometers (3,915 miles) from its source in the mountains of Tibet all the way to the East China Sea.
