The meaning of Solstice is "stopping of Sun" or "standing still of the Sun". In fact it is the longest day of the year. It happened on 21st June in Northern hemisphere. It is summer solstice. It happens between December 20 and December 23 in Southern hemisphere.  Summer solstice is also called midsummer.

The day was 16 hours and 38 minutes long on June 21 in London.

Solstice in Times Square event was held at the 12th annual solstice in Times Square in New York where day long free Yoga class was conducted.  The number of participants participated in the event are estimated between 8,000 and 11,000.

Christina Cielusniak (25) a yoga instructor from Wayne, New Jersey says that it was the longest day and the Sun is worshipped as per the Yoga tradition. Surya Namaskarams (Salutations to Sun) is part of Yoga that covers all important postures of yoga.  It is a package of 12 powerful Yoga Asanas.  But in Times Square, many more asanas were couched than Surya Namaskarams.

Tim Tompkins, president of the Times Square Alliance, says that of all places Times Square is more difficult to concentrate and as such it is a challenge for them to do it.  All concentration one needs to observe in Yoga is the movement of the body.  It is advised that way so that the mind will not engage in other thoughts during yoga to give room to excitement or any other negative thought.

By twisting the physical body in Yoga, subtle pressure is applied to some parts of the body to pump energy to the selected vital parts which in daily routine willbe catered only with average quantity of energy to make it an equal distribution among the parts of the body.  By pressing the body parts in a scientific way the energies will be directed to the specific parts of the body to ensure physical health.
