Karnataka doctor appointed as Surgeon General of America

US President Barack Obama has nominated a Karnataka based doctor Dr Vivek Hallegere Murthy as new Surgeon General of America on Tuesday. The 36-year-old Dr Vivek H Murthy will be the youngest Surgeon General in the history of United States of America and he will replace Regina Benjamin who left this post last year. Surgeon General post emphasizes more on public health issues and the Surgeon General advices on various health issues. This is a four year term post.  

Dr Vivek H Murthy hails from Hallegere village in Maddur taluk of Mandya district in Karnataka. But he was born in London and brought up in US. He holds BA from Harvard University, an MBA from Yale School of Management, and an MD from Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Vivek H Murthy is a physician at the Brigham and is co-founder and president of Doctors for America, a Washington, DC-based group that endorses for access to affordable, high quality health care. In the year 2011, he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health.
