Kanchi Swamijis Acquitted From Murder Case

Who is the murderer then Shankararaman's son Ananda Sharma questions!

Kanchi Pithadhipathi Jayendra Saraswati and Vijayendra Saraswati and other accused in the murder case of Shankararaman are acquitted by the Puducheri Court on Wednesday.

Shankararaman was the Manager of Kanchipuram Varadaraja Swamy Temple who made accusations against the Pirthadhipathi Jayendra Saraswati that the funds of the temple were misappropriated by the Swamijis.  Soon after that he was found murdered in his office on September 3, 2004.

Tamil Nadu police arrested Swami Jayendra Saraswati in a dramatic way from Mahaboobnagar in Andhra Pradesh on the day of Diwali in November 2004. Later his heir apparent Vijayendra Saraswati also was arrested.  These arrests caused nationwide protests from Hindu religious groups. The two swamijis were give bail but 22 more were arrested in the case out of whom one person was dead.

A total of 189 witnesses were examined and cross examined out of whom 83 witnessed turned hostile during the trial between 2009 and 2012.

The court observed that no evidence was found against the Kanchi Swamijis or other 21 accused.  Even the family members of Shankararaman failed to identify the accused in the court. As there was incriminating evidence against them, they are all acquitted by court.

The victim’s son was shocked with the verdict and says that it is unbelievable.  If not they, he asks, who the murderer of his father is. The family members of Shankararaman are not able to decide whether an appeal should be made on the verdict or not.  As the material evidence is missing in the case to accuse any counsels opine that the case is not fit for appeal.
