Kanimozhi who is contesting for the Rajya Sabha seat that is going to be vacant next month due to the completion of her tenure will be supported by the Congress Party.  Five more Rajya Sbha seats are going to be vacated next month.  But they are already taken by AIDMK and left parties.  The one that is to be given to DMK party will be represented by Kanimozhi daughter of former Tamilnadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.  As DMK has no adequate strength to elect Kanimozhi, Congress party is coming forward to support her.

Kanimozhi thanked Sonia Gandhi for the support and distributed shawls to Congress leaders in Chennai.  She avoided the questions of the press on the issue of DMK’s ally to Congress.  The DMK withdrew its support to UPA in the month of March, protesting in Sri Lanka Tamil issue.   Political analysts assessing the move say that the Congress Party expects a quid pro quo in passing some Bills or in a tie in the next elections.

Kanimozhi who is an accused in 2G spectrum case was arrested on 21st May 2011 and she spent in Tehar jail till she was granted bail by Delhi High Court on 28th November, 2011.
