Rajesh Khanna's pyre lit by his grandson, Aarav

The air at Vile Parle's crematorium was melancholic was 9 year old Aarav, Rajesh Khanna's grandson, lit his pyre on Thursday.

"Aarav lit the pyre and Akshay Kumar, who is the son in law of Rajesh Khanna,  assisted him," said Vijay Zaveri, a very close friend of the late Bollywood star.

Thousands of mourning fans have braved the rain and gathered at the crematorium to pay their last respects to Bollywood's first superstar Rajesh Khanna.

The final journey of the legend began at 10 am at his Bandra's residence, Aashirwad. His dead body was sealed inside a trasparent casket which was put in the mini truck which was baroquely decorated with white flowers. After passing on the roads of Carter Road, Turner Road, and S V Road, the truck reached the crematorium. The rain had cut the procession short but they had all insisted on enduring the rain to see the last of 'Kaka'.

Dimple Kapadia, his espoused wife and his younger daughter were accompanying his final journey along with his son in law, Akshay Kumar, husband of Twinkle. Thousands of people turned out at the crematorium to say their last goodbye to Rajesh Khanna, who would be sorely missed.

Amitabh Bachchan. Sudhir Mishra, Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar, Sajid Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Aadesh Shrivastava have all attended the funeral to pay their respects.

Superstar Rajesh Khanna died of a liver infection on Wednesday.

His journey in the industry began in 1966 with Akhari Khat and was followed by numerous blockbuster hits like Aradhana, Kati Patang, Anand and Amar Prem which earned him the much deserved title of Superstar. He was the only actor to date who had 15 consecutive super hit movies.
