Sonia decides in favour of Telangana?

Have the just concluded by polls in the state, in which the congress party faced a debacle, have paved the way for the formation of Telangana state with Hyderabad being part of the T state?

All pointers emanating from the post-by poll scenario seem to be pointing towards the creation of separate state of Telangana. Sources in Delhi revealed the congress president has already taken a decision in favour of Telangana formation and the announcement may come any time now.

TDP supremo, who was seen as a stumbling block in the formation of the T state till now, may no more be a logjam in deciding in favour of the state being divided.

According to the sources, the first indication in favour of the separate state came by way of condolences expressed by CM Kirankumar reddy and former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu over the suicide of MBA student Bojya Naik seeking separate state on Saturday.

The condolence message was the first of its kind from the two leaders who never bothered to send such messages when suicides took place in the past. It only indicates a sea change in the attitude of these two leaders who stood like a rock against Telangana formation.

The condolence message from Chandrababu is only the culmination of gradual change of his stance over Telangana. If you remember well, he promised not to speak against Telangana in future during his pre by-poll campaigning.

Also, the condolence message by Kirankumar reddy could not be a possibility without the approval of the party higher-ups in Delhi.

The second indication is that party president Sonia Gandhi directed the minister Danam Nagender and his ilk not to rake up the issue of Hyderabad being a Union Territory.  The diktat came during his meeting with her today in Delhi.

Danam Nagender and Mukesh Goud are the only two ministers who dared to talk openly against Hyderabad being part of Telangana state in case the state is divided. Both of them always advocated the Seema Andhra point of view that Hyderabad must be turned into a Union Territory if division is inevitable.

Now, the congress party chief has asked Danam Nagender not to talk of Hyderabad in terms of UT, it is as good as asking the Seema Andhra leaders not to expect Hyderabad to be a UT.

Again for the first time, the chief pro-united AP advocate and Vijayawada Congress MP Mr Lagadapati Rajagopal talked of Telangana sentiment. “The congress lost the by polls because of the Telangana sentiment,” he said after the by-polls results were out.

Another pointer comes in the outburst of retiring T congress member K. Keshava Rao in Rajya Sabha today against the Centre. More so than his outburst, the indication comes from the decision of the chair in allowing him to express profusely in favour of Telangana.

In Lok Sabha too, the TRS members, the congress and TDP members of the T region joined hands today successfully for the first time in high lighting the cause of the separate state of Telangana and ensuring the adjournment of the house. It was first time that the house was adjourned for the day on the issue of Telangana without transacting any business.

Political observers feel that Congress leadership knows full well that if an immediate decision is not taken on the issue, BJP may consolidate its position in the name of Telangana causing further erosions in the Congress vote banks in the state. “There is no choice now for the Congress leadership except for taking a decision in favour of T state,” said senior congress leader.

More than anything else, Minster Saraiah said today in Hyderabad that the congress party would soon announce its decision on the Telangana issue soon. (J)
