CEE for Eng students from 2013, AP seeks postponement by one year

In a far reaching consequence for the seekers of the engineering studies at the national level, the government has decided to merge the joint entrance examination for admission into IITs (IIT-JEE) and the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and hold a common examination from 2013.

Revealing this at the end of the State Education Ministers in Delhi Wednesday evening, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told journalists that the common eligibility examination (CEE) would cover admissions into 15 IITs, 30 National Institutes of Technology and four Indian Institutes of Information Technology.

“The best scoring students can choose an institution of their choice for pursuing their engineering course,” he said, adding it is up to the state governments and private institutions to join the common entrance examination system. All universities and national level institutions will use the all India merit list for admissions, he said.

Sibal said Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Chandigarh have already agreed to follow the system but some states like Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Puducherry and West Bengal sought more time to take decision on the issue.

AP seeks postponement by one year

Deputy Chief Minister Rajanarasimha requested the Centre to postpone the new CEE by one year as otherwise the first year Intermediate students of the present year will find it difficult to face the examinations.

Reacting to the request, Sibal told him the states are free to take a decision on the issue. “If you want, you can extend the system to your universities also,” he said.

Minister of state for Human Resources Ms Purandhareswari said the government will consider conducting the CEE in regional languages too from 2014 but it will be held in English and Hindi languages only for the year 2013.

Explaining about the scheme of the examination, she said the final merit list will be based on a 40 per cent weightage for the State Board examination results and 60 per cent for the entrance test marks.

“The CEE, consisting of main and advanced parts, will test the general aptitude and specific knowledge in the subject,” she said. (JUBS)
