Parties oppose Bhavani Island’s lease to Ganta

Leaders and activists of TDP and CPM today resorted to Rasta Roko on national highway number 9 opposing the handing over of the naturally formed Bhavani Island in River Krishna at Vijayawada to the Minister for Ports Mr Ganta Srinivasa Rao.

After visiting the island, TDP leader Devineni Umamaheswara rao and others demonstrated at the Baram Park raising slogans against the Government’s decision.

“The island must be taken back from Ganta,” they shouted the slogans demanding the cancellation of the deal.

It might be said Tourism minister V. Vasanth Kumar announced in Vijayawada last night that the island was handed over to the Pratyusha Shipping Associates owned by Ganta Srinivasa Rao for a 33-year old lease for its development.

The TDP and CPM leaders alleged that the island was handed over to Ganta as per the conditions agreed for PRP merger with the Congress party. (JUBS)
