B-Wood 2011: Super cops’ super entertainers

If the records are going to be the yard stick for trends then B-Wood is all set to weave more box office bonanzas with ploys centering on super cops.

Super Cops seem to the super entertainers in 2011. Unlike their predecessors, the new genre cops don’t only turn up in the climax, in B-Wood cinemas. They are today evolving into the main elements of the ploy and shall continue to hog the lime light, if records are to speak. A deeper look at B-Wood box offices stats for 2011 will reveal that the average cop is given the due respects in the silver screen version. Be it the Salman Khan of ‘’Dabangg’’, Ajay Devgan of “Singham” or John Abraham of “Force.” All have created histories at the Box office. The trends seem to emulate since 2010 and is sure to continue in 2012, with Aamir Khan’s Talaash. More in the offing are "Maximum", "Zila Ghaziabad" and "Shootout at Wadala" lined up for release. The astonishing fact is that Aamir Khan, who always looks for near to reality plot, is donning the Cop uniform in Talaash after a gap of eleven years.

In “Maximum,” Sonu Sood shall don the cop role and the film also stars the veteran Naseerudin Shah, who is also a cop. Anil Kapoor the B-Wood and Hollywood star is also smitten by the Supercop bug.  For Ekta Kapoor's "Shootout At Wadala," Anil shall wear the uniform. The film is based on the 1982 incident in which gangster Manya Surve was shot dead in Mumbai. Anil portrays the role of inspector Isaque Bagwan and would be accompanied by Ronit Roy as Raja Tambat.

Remake director Priyadarsan is also making a film “Tezz.” He roped in southern superstar Mohanlal, as a dutiful cop from Scotland Yard. The film boasts of a rich star cast that includes stars Anil, Ajay, Kangna Ranaut and Sameera Reddy. The next in the list is Munna Bhai, Sanjay Dutt who takes the cop avatar in Thakur Pritam Singh in "Zila Ghaziabad.”

Grapevine states that the B-Wood Badshah, Sharukh Khan is all set to don the uniform in his much speculated Gautam Menon’s Hindi remake of Tamil film "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu.”

Meanwhile Hriday Shetty's recent release "Chaalis Chauraasi" narrated a tale of four policemen, played by Naseer, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Ravi Kishan. Another recent movie, "Kya Yahi Sach Hai", directed by IPS officer Y.P. Singh, attempted to expose the level of corruption in the police force.

So the Super cop formula is here to stay, but in real lives a common man is still afraid to walk into a police station in the country to make even a complaint. Hope these new genre films dispel the fears in the general public. And further hope that cops transform “friendly neighbors.”                          (With inputs from Internet-AarKay)
