Pope bids adieu today

Before his resignation formally as the Pope, Pope Benedict XVI has pledged "unconditional reverence and obedience" to his successor in his final greetings to cardinals.

Telling the cardinals to work together in harmony like an orchestra, with agreement and unity. The college of cardinals will work to elect the next pope in the conclave. He also offered to pray for the cardinals in the days to come when they choose his successor in the traditional way.

At 5pm, Pope Benedict is expected to leave the palace which he will not visit again as a pontiff. He will be flown to the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo.

Finally his formal resignation would be submitted at 8pm sharp making him the only pontiff to resign from the position in more than 600 years. The doors of the palazzo will remain shut until the next pope and the Swiss Guards will be allowed to go off duty.
