314 members engulfed in fire in Karachi, Lahore

In a pair of accidental fires at factories in Karachi and Lahore, incidentally the largest cities of Pakistan had claimed 314 lives as of Wednesday. The accidental fires had trapped the people inside the buildings and people could not escape the wrath of the fires as the building had not even the most basic of the safety equipment like alarms or sprinklers.

Industrial safety clearly was taken for granted in Pakistan as there were hundreds of illegally set up factories even in the most densely populated cities of the country. Bribery to officials for the sake of neglecting the safety norms is a common occurrence.

The more deadly of the two blazes, which both erupted on Tuesday night, was at a garment factory in the southern city of Karachi, the country's economic heart which killed 289 people.

It was mentioned that the deaths were more due to suffocation as people lay trapped in the basement with no fire exits. The smoke filled the room and the main doors leading outside were locked according to a top firefighter. He also mentioned the cause of the fire remains unclear.

A fire also swept through a four-story shoe factory in the eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday night, killing 25 people, some from burns and some from suffocation, said senior police officer Multan Khan. The factory was illegally set up in a residential part of the city
