Pipili rape victim dies

“I think when a person has been found guilty of rape he should be castrated. That would stop him pretty quick.”

-Billy Graham

In an unfortunate incident, Pipili rape victim (a dalit girl who was allegedly gang raped in November last year in Arjungoda village of Odisha) died at SCB Medical College and Hospital after battling with life for more than five months. The hospital staff confirmed the death of the rape victim and said she passed away at 11.15 AM on Thursday. Her dead body was handed over to the victim's family along with Rs. 10 lakh cheque by Cuttack district collector Girish on behalf of the state government as the compensation. The victim died of septicaemia (infection of blood due to bacterial presence), respiratory distress and cardiac arrest. It may be noted that the victim had been in coma and Odisha High Court decided to stop monitoring the treatment two days ago as there were no signs of improvement.

Pipili rape incident is one of the worst episodes of crime in the country that led to the outcry across the nation. A 19-year-old dalit woman was allegedly gang raped and morally challenged persons tried to even strangulate her. She was found in Arjungonda village on November 29, 2011 in semi nude position and was not in her conscious. The worried parents rushed her to hospital then and she was allegedly given anti-venom injection by the doctors stating that she was subjected to snake bite.  The angered parents later staged protests and the incident soon spread every nook and corner of Odisha that even led to the sacking of the then Pipili MLA, whose role was also alleged in the gang rape.

The case was taken up by the High Court and ordered SCB Medical College to provide her best treatment. In her long battle of six months between life and death, the victim finally gave up.
