Seriously contemplating over the issue the Lankan government felt that by accepting the UN resolution would only mean that staking their sovereignty.

The crisis was much seen as the means to avoid introspection of the war crimes committed during the Sri Lankan forces against LTTE. As introspection was bound to unleash realities, that could damage the country’s image, to the exterior world. Precisely as expected the Lankan Government announced today that it would not be possible for the country to abide by the UNHRC resolution that censured it over its human rights record. Ascertaining that the probe conducted by the government on the three decade war, would be implemented instead.

Speaking to media, Lankan External Affairs Minister G L Peiris said "We had taken a decision not to abide by the resolution irrespective of the result. We would treat it as interference in the sovereignty of the country.” Colombo seemed to be geared up for any eventuality by opoosing the resolution. Indian owing to internal pressures had too joined to vote against Colombo. The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh wrote a personal letter to the Lankan counterpart over and explained the reasons.
